Marlin .450

Okay, I've decided that I must have a Marlin .450 lever action. Now I have a really stupid question: Can 45-70 ammo be shot in the .450? I know .450 ammo can't be shot in a 45-70 because of the belt around the cartridge. But what about the other way around?

Are the 450 Marlin and the 45-70 cartridges interchangeable.....in a word no. The 450 has no rim on the case, so the barrel will not be machined to accept one. The action would not close because the 45-70's rim would interfere. If a 45-70 was fired in the 450 chamber, the case would buldge to fill the space in the chamber for the extra wide belt on the 450 case.

I think there's a lot of experimentation to be done with the 450 Marlin cartridge. Enjoy yourself!!

An ammo shop I go to regularly had 7 boxes of that ammo ripped off. They used to have a very open policy. Everything was out on the shelves. You could open a box if you wanted to see what something was. (They do alot of reloads.) Thanks to the 450 Marlin thief, now there are locked doors on the front of all the shelves.

Most of you know how foamy-at-the-mouth I get at mention of the 450 Marlin.

Mesa, I advise you against buying one of these. Reasons?

1) It's a new cartridge. Only sold buy one ammo manufacturer. Thus it could be dropped in a few years (I'll drink to that!) leaving you in a sticky situation with obsolete-ammo needs.

2) It's only class 3 factory loadings. If you want power, spend the money on a 45-70 and some relaoding equipment. That gives you much a much wider range of options.

3) It's a blood-sucking cartridge! If for nothing else...don't buy it because of that.

Read my lips -- No new 450 Marlins!
