I want to buy a marlin 45-70 lever action model 1895 capable of using BUFFALO BORE RIFLE AMMO. How do you determine the manuf. date using the serial number for marlin 45-70 lever action. Buffalo bore says the model 1895 built after 1972 can be used.

Just for curiosity's sake, subtract the first two numbers of a Marlin serial number from 100 to get the year made.

HOWEVER, the modern Marlin 1895 on the 336 action with round bolt was not introduced until 1972 so ALL of them are OK with BB ammunition. A friend had an early 1970s rifle "with conventional rifling for cast and jacketed bullets" and his Elmer Keith load was more than I cared to plink with.

The old orignial 1895 with flat bolt as made only 1895-1915 is not the same and antiques should not be shot with hotloaded ammunition like BB.

JIM WATSON marlin 45-70

Thank you for the information, l already have a H&R 45-70 nice gun dosnt kick to much. Need a lever action for pigs& bear.

The first 2 digits from 100 code will work on most Marlins, but not all. I had a 1970's era 1895 that I bought used in 1976 that did not fit that code. Or any other code I found. I've got 2 different limited edition versions of the 336, one made in 1988, the other in 2005 that don't fit either.

the early 1895 marlin 45-70,s made in 1972-73 had the serial number started by B,i have one with the serial number B001920(my father,s birth year). eastbank.
