If it is an older .44-40 is worth considerably more than $300. If it is a newer Cowboy version it is worth quite a bit more than $300. Either way unless it is in incredibly poor condition three hundred bucks is a good price.
For home defense and hunting out to 100 yards or so it would be a good performer. The .44-40 cartridge drops like a rock beyond 100 yards.
You cannot shoot .44 mags. through the .44-40 lever guns.

Gunslinger...thasnks for the info. As far as not being able to look at it-I could stand there and the guy would hold it up for me but I couldn't actually touch the firearm without having picture ID such as my license...shopt rules I suppose. The guy I talked with was a moron at best-I just wanted him to shut up so I could gracefully sprint for the door.
