Marlin 39A

I've known several folks who have them, and the comments have invariably been quite favorable. One guy I know would probably give away his deer rifle before selling his pet 39.

I've had my Golden 39-A Mountie since 1963. I like it; pretty much everybody that ever shot it liked it. I think I'm going to buy a new leather sling for it when it turns 40 and dress it up.

My uncle wants it, but not badly enough to trade me his Remington 541-S Custom for it. It's been about 10 or 15 years since I made him that counter-offer and he's still talking about it doing it sometime.

I'm willing to put in a little cash if that's what it takes, but I think the thing that bothers him about the deal is that he gave me the Marlin as a birthday present. :)

It is my favorite .22. I have never had one problem with mine and it shoots minute of squirrel at 50 yards all day long with the factory iron sights. You can fill it up in the morning and hunt all day without a reload. Good luck, Mike

A great rifle and typically tack drivers. I got one last year and enjoy the heck out of it. No plastic or aluminum, they're forged steel & wood - the way real rifles are supposed to be.

A bit of trivia:

The Marlin lever action .22 holds the world record for continuous production rifle of any make, caliber, or kind. Marlin's been making these babies virtually unchanged since the Model 1892. The 1897 was an improvement on the original, and the 39 and improvement on that, 39A, 39AS, etc.

110 years in production and all they've done is tweaked some minor parts and change the name a few times. If you like historic guns in general, or cowboy guns in particular, this is the only .22 lever with a real pedigree. -- Kernel

The 39 is an American legend. The only compaint I have is that the new ones have a PC safety, and the stocks are checkered.
If I was to buy another one, I'd look for an older one in the used rack at the gun store. However, unless you are used to the older guns, the safety probably won't offend your sense of what's "right".

There's just something about the 39-A. They are extremely accurate, due to the heavy, Micro-Groove barrel. The more you shoot them, the smoother it gets. A true legend.

I found one in 22 mag along time ago - still regret not buying it....:(

Something about lever action 22's that trips my trigger!

Alas, i found a XP-100 that i got my eyeball peeled on now... ;)

Maybe Santa will have mercy on me.

If you saw a 39A in .22 Magnum you missed out on a real rarity. I have never even heard of one.

I am sorry I ever sold my 39M, especially now I do some CAS. It would sure be easier to buy .22s to practice with than to load .44WCF.

In our post ban environment the 39AS makes great sense. What other .22 can you buy new that offers 19+1 capacity? None! If you load up with .22 shorts it holds 25 rounds. No banana clips, no post-ban price gouging.
I have a recent 39AS and my only complaint is the sights. The front bead is somewhat easy to loose in the sage brush where I hunt rabbits. I'm considering a Williams fiber optic unit for the front, and an Ashley Express aperature for the rear. Other than that it's a fine shooting machine.

I love mine and I wouldn't trade it off for any other .22 rifle. The one thing I did find out about it when I first got it was that the takedown screw has to be turned back to the same position each time. The first time I took it apart and put it back together, I found my groups had shifted their point of impact a ways to the left. I found that if I hand tighten it then turn it a little farther with a screwdriver so it points at the trigger all the time, I have no problems with it at all. As far as the newer rifles with the idiot button, I think there's an outfit that makes a replacement screw that replaces that damn thing for about $10 or so. If I was going to get a new one, that is the FIRST thing that would be changed!

I have a model 39TDS, and I have to agree with everybody else. Marlin makes a perfect .22. Reliable, extremely simple, very accurate, and a really classic look. It's a great rifle.

My father-in-law has a Marlin Golden 39A. It's very accurate! It shoots .22LR, .22 Long and .22 short. Great for squirrel hunting. In fact, I have his 39A in my closet right now. It's important to clean it after you use it, and to wipe it with a silicon cloth after you handle it. My father-in-law's 39A has a scope on it. I don't prefer that. I like the semi-buckhorn sight.

I've had Marlins in 39A full-size, a 39M, and an 1897, and every one was a honey. I agree with the concern about takedown, but easily remedied. Makes a great bicycle rifle....used to take mine down ad ride out to the squirrel woods when I didn't have a car.

I own a Marlin 39 A Mountie and it's one of my prized posessions. I bought my daughter a Marlin 39D for her first birthday years ago and her mother had a fit for buying that baby a rifle. That baby is now a grown woman who still owns her Marlin 39. I paid 100 bucks for it brand new back in 1973.
