Marlin 39A not ejecting casing consistently

Hello All,

I have a new Marlin 39A. It is consistently failing to eject the spent casing. I can see the casing fall back into the gun. Any ideas what is happening, and how to correct the situation?

Thanks.

The ejector is a spring-loaded piece, pinned or screwed into the left wall of the receiver. When you open the bolt, you should see the ejector swing out away from the wall as it is uncovered by the bolt. It could be bent or broken.

Well,

It must be bent or broken, because I see it there, and it is swinging away from the receiver wall when I operate the lever.

Strange. I haven't even gone through 3 boxes.

Is this happening with more than one brand of ammo?

You ought to be able to insert an empty case into the chamber, then extract it slowly and see what happens. A bad extractor or extractor spring may be dropping the case before it even reaches the ejector.

are you having problems when you operate the lever smartly? sometimes operating the lever slowly, especially if the rifle is canted, causes ejection problems.

I do not know about the newer Marlin 39As. Mine was bought in 66.

For a fact, I know that if you run a rod threough the bore, past the chamber, the brush/patch can contact the ejector and bend it backward. On mine, there is a screw that holds the ejector assy, that, if you press the ejector tip in toward the frame, and turn that screw 1/2 turn, it will 'capture' the ejector and allow the passage of the rod/tip/jag, patch, etc.

the first year I had my 39A, I did more damage cleaning the dang thing than the following 40 years shooting it. If you just gotta clean the bore, use a bore snake...after getting the ejector out of the way.

You can visit Brownells web page, clink on the schematic pages, find the Marlin 39A, and maybe you can see what I am refering to.

The 39A malfunctioning is about as possible as your pocket change and car keys having a gravitational pull on the Andromeda Galaxy.

Hello All,

I want to respond to some of your thoughts/comments.

1. As the rifle is new, I've only tried two brands of ammunition: Winchester and Federal. It failed on both.

2. It doesn't happen everytime, but I'd say 2 out of 10 (at least).

3. It fails when I manipulate the lever slowly or quickly. I see the casing begin to make its way out, then fall back in to the receiver.

4. The ejector does swing away, but with nothing in which to compare it, I can't say if it is damaged.

5. I have only run a bore snake through it. The ejector was held under the screw during that process.

Since this is a new rifle, I recommend contacting Marlin.
Obviously, something is really wrong, and on a new rifle, it's best to let the company repair it under the warranty.

Definitely an extractor problem, not the ejector, as the empty case is not even reaching the ejector. If you bought it locally, return it to the store and have them either fix it (if they can) or return it to Marlin. Don't try to fix it yourself unless you are willing to void the warranty.

Final Chapter

Hello All,

Just wanted to close the loop on this. I contacted Marlin yesterday. They'll be sending me a shipping label (my box cost, they pickup shipping). I'm told it will take about 30 days for them to fix whatever ails the 39A.

Thanks for your thoughts and input.

Cheers,

DG
