Marlin 336Y spikehorn

I need some help. A friend of a friend is offering me a Marlin 336Y for 200.00.
How can I tell if this is a Spikehorn? Are there markings? Does anyone now what range of serial numbers where run for them? Any help would be most appreciated.

Mike

The only thing that you need to worry with is if it is made by Marlin or by Remington. If its a Remington-made version, I steer wide and clear. A Remington-made 336 has the serial number on the lower left side of the receiver and starts with an R. Otherwise, $200 is a great price for just about any 336 in decent shape.

The Y was discontinued and to my knowledge has not been made in several years. They had 16.25" barrels and a shortened "Youth" stock. At $200 you better buy it quick before he finds out what it is. They are highly sought after.

I bought a new one a couple months ago, and the LGS that I bought it from has another new on the shelf, so I think they are still being made. Jump on it for $200. Mine is short, handy, and a blast to shoot.

To the best of my knowledge, the Spikehorn has walnut stocks, and was discontinued. Marlin still makes the 336 in a youth sized gun, but it is stocked in birch.

$200.00 sounds like a great deal for either, and I would jump on it, as long as the gun does not have problems.

At $200 I would not care who made it as long as its in good condition.

At the beginning of the year they said they were going to start making them again. Given how many are on gunbroker right now, I'd say they're rolling them out. They used to be about as rare as hen's teeth.
