Which is a better option?

1) Replace the barrel band with the swiveled version.

2) Uncle Mike's splint band that clamps to the magazine tube.

Was never discussed as an option with my gunsmith? Is this common, and/or have you done it?

It can be done, I've done several, but you only end up with about 2 or 3 threads holding the stud. I found its better to drill through the band and inlet the knurled nut made for such applications into the wood underneath the band.

Back to the original question, I think the replacement band with the stud is best, cleanest looking, and likely cheapest in the long run if you are paying to have the work done. I never cared for the magazine band type, but others seem to like them.

IMHO, there is not really a bad choice there, only a personal preference, and YMMV.

It's YOUR rifle, so I'd suggest that you go with whichever YOU like best on it.

I ordered the replacement band today. I really like the look, and where it's positioned.
