I'm considering a Marlin 336. Now, if I'm going to get the .35 Rem model, I'd have to order it, and it'd cost more, but let's assume for a second that that doesn't matter. What's the opinion? .30-30 Winchester or .35 Remington?

What are the muzzle velocities of the two cartridges out of a 20" barrel?

Which is more effective at longer range?

How does the recoil compare?

My 1989 Marlin 336 in 35 is more accurate than my 30WCs. It is my favorite lever. Ammo is about $2.00 a box (factory 20rds) more than my 30WC ammo. I can not tell much difference in recoil between the two cals however my Marlin is heavier than the Winchesters in 30WC that I shoot.

Main difference between the .35 Remington and the .30-30 is a slight energy advantage for the .35, along with the bragging rights back at the campfire for those who want to be a little "different" and tote something other than a .30-30, but with comparable ballistics.

Bear in mind that .30-30 is the most common hunting rifle caliber in both North and South America. Every backwoods hillbilly gas station in the US has a box of .30-30 on the shelf somewhere. I'd feel all warm and fuzzy knowing that I can get ammo for my lever gun damn near everywhere...there's not a gun shop in this country that doesn't carry it.

actually my shop is out of 30-30, they don't have any 35 remington either, though. My choice--- i like both, is that so bad?

go with the 35 rem. I own both and much prefer the 35. There is just something about that thud it makes when it hits a deer.

I like the .35 Remigton.

Mostly based on sentimental reasons because the first rifle I ever used for hunting was a J.C. Higgings .35 Remington lever action. The larger frontal diameter of the .35 is also a plus in my book.

I looked at a Marlin 336 today in .38-55, which I understand to be a very accurate and effective cartridge out to about 250 yds., albeit probably more scare in a back road gun shop than .35 Remington> But is that a viable choice too? Just wondering... LBC

If you reload you might think about all the different 357 diameter pistol bullets that can be loaded in the 35 remington cartridge.

The 30/30's cheaper to shoot, with a flatter trajectory. The .35 hits harder at close range. If you want to use it for fun shooting and deer hunting, get the 30/30. If you want a rifle that can double for bear, get the .35.

.35 Remington

200 grains of roundnosed thumping power. In theory, the rimless .35 may feed better, but the Marlin 336 and Winchester 94s are legendary in reliability, so feeding is NOT an issue.

I had a Remington Model 14 pump in .35. My first deer RIFLE.

While I do not have a .35 Rem myself, I have hunted with several people that do have and use them. From what I have seen, it is a near perfect cartridge for woods hunting in Michigan. With decent shot placement, it drops deer like a sack of potatoes. I do not recall ever having to track a deer more then 15 yards that was well shot by a .35. Can't say the same about deer shot with the 30-30, have tracked deer well shot with a 30-30 that went several hundred yards.

I'd say go with the .30-30 because ammo is SO easy to find, but if you're a handloader and just think you'd rather have the .35, then why not?
