Marlin 1895 SS or G?

I am going to buy one on Monday. I like the stock on the SS but I like the shorter barrel on the guide rifle. I have no expeirience with ported barrells. Good, bad,no big deal? any advice will be trully appreciated. I bought a 45/70 Handi-Rifle I didn't know I wanted at a going out of business sale and fell in love with the caliber even though loading it for that no weight gun halfway between the old Springfield and the Marlin kicks my skinny self painfully :)

Bought the Guide Gun, didn't like the porting. Bought the 1895SS yesterday to replace it. Am thinking of having my gunsmith cut and recrown it to 20".

Both are *nice* - depends on what you want.

I cheated. :D I picked up of of WildWestGuns Co-pilots. It's a 1895SS cut down plus come goodies. My friend has a G model. We both prefer the curved stock on the SS. Both our guns are ported so that much is hard to tell the difference. I don't mind the porting so much on a "low pressure" round like the 45-70. Even the hot loads aren't high enough to make the porting "bark" too loud. My gun has a 16.5" bbl and handles great. It's not a take-down model.

I prefer armed combat to unarmed combat. It's easier on the knuckles.
