i run across two c&b handguns last week. one is a .36 1851. i can't find any markings on it that tell me who made it. i did see a marking on the left side of the barrel with two xx and a 9. i think that makes it a 1973. it also has three letters stamped on the left side. i think one was a r. I'll stop by Monday and take a pic. also has a symbol that looks like a coat of arms with a star over it....there is a .44 cal 1860 with a BD in a box. i think that makes it a 1994. it has the same coat of arms with a star over it. other than that i cant make out who made them. any help would be appreciated. i don't think nether one has ever been fired.

The coat of arms with a star over it is an Italian proof house mark; it means nothing more than the gun was proof tested by an Italian proof house.

You are correct about the date marks.

Manufacturer's marks are some times placed under the loading lever close to the hinge point on the receiver. Another good hiding place for guns that seem unmarked is the bottom of the frame by the serial number.

If you know what COM or DOM mean it would solve a 16yr mystery for me. Two manufacturers that I have been able to identify.

I am working on it.

I colleague goes to Italy once per year to the vicinity of Milan. I explained the situation to him. He is going to do a little research.
