MarkII and rust spots

Hi all,

I picked up a used MarkII which is otherwise in perfect shape except for some rust spots on the backstrap. The gun looks like it has maybe a couple of hundred rounds through it and never been cleaned. I took it down, used BreakFree spray, cleaned well, and oiled it. All the internal parts are in great shape, not marks and not a spot of rust. However the backstrap and the litle knob on the bottom of the front have some little rust spots. Now I have no idea how to deal with this being that I never had any rust on my other guns, thanx to proper cleaning and use of a silicon cloth. How do you I clean the rust without damaging the bluing (which is kind of a rust). If there no choice about damaging the blueing, is there a way that a novice can use to reply it?

Thanx

Depends on how bad the rust is. I've had a few little patches of the stuff pop up after a weekend of shooting, and not getting around to cleaning for a few days afterward. A VERY LIGHT application of 000 or 0000 steel wool cleaned it right up. I've had a couple of other spots that went unnoticed for some time, actually turning into a tiny "bump" on the surface. The same treatment cleared that up too, and you'd need magnification to find the minute pits left behind. Niether of these incidences left any trace of damage to surrounding bluing. I suspect that what you have is somewhat worse than what I describe, I'd wait for a few other opinions before I set to work on it. If all else fails, I hear that Ruger does a pretty darn decent reblue job, at a real good price.

BTW, how's it shoot? :D

Sometimes, rubbing it down with a cloth soaked in penetrating oil will get rid of mild rust spots.

Well, rubbing it with and oiled cloth helped but they are still there. I might have to try the metal wool path or just send it to Ruger.

And it shoots great. Much better then I can. It took me a bit to get used to the grip angle, but I now shoot it better then my Buckmark. Which stinks 'cause I like the Buckmark design better and it is easier to clean. :D

Thanx for the advice

Try rubbing the rust spots with some fine steel wool soaked in WD-40, this is how I got the rust off of my Rem 870 rib that my brother let rust and it didn't remove any of the blueing.

I think I'd fix them as good as possible and shoot the thing! There's no law that says you have to pay $100 for a couple of rust spots, right? :D

An old time 'smith's trick is to use the sharp edge of a penny and some penetrating fluid to scratch the rust spot off. This reduces the area abraded by the steel wool method.
