I have a Colt-Berdan rifle in .45-70 (not the Russian .43 Berdan Cartridge). It has no marks on it, even sight range marks, except each piece including stock is stamped "M" for model. Dr Ed Ezell once told me that it was a Colt Factory Tool Room Model, the one they make by hand to make the tooling off of. I once had a Colt Berdan carbine (SN 5)in .43 Berdan and there were several small differences in the action details. The barrel is only hand tightened into the action and the mainspring is not tempered and very weak, so I know that it was never intended to be fired. Thanks,

TexasVet, I would strongly suggest having your Colt-Berdan rifle (32.5" barrel) formally appraised to ensure authenticity and determine overall condition. There were only 20 Berdan rifles chambered in .45-70 from the factory. A Berdan rifle chambered in the 10.75x58Rmm Russian caliber in excellent condition could be worth about $3,000-$4,000. If your rifle is an original factory chambering in .45-70 a significant premium would be added. Hope this helps!
