Hey guys, so since this is a weapons forum, I'm guessing there are a few marines or x marines in here. I'm thinking about going into marine scout sniper training after high school but my family seems pretty far against it and they're starting to talk me out of it. Any of you who served in the armed forces, I'd love to hear about your experiences and if you are glad that you served your country. Thanks for serving, as a youngster, I'd love to hear back.

I served in the Navy. It was the most memorable experience of my life until marriage and the birth of our children.

This is not meant as a slam, but there is no such animal as an x-Marine.

There are "former" Marines.

There are former members of all the armed services represented here.

There are many who shot representing the armed services and there is a wealth of information to be gleaned here.

Good luck!! Serving your country is HONORABLE.

Geetarman:D

You dont just get into sniper school

Better get into the gym and get to shooting. Oh and you may want to see if you can lay in your yard for hours with out moving or using the bath room. I wasnt marine but an airborne army ranger, tell you the truth it sounds easier to get where I was at then to get any where fun in the marines.

Geetarman: I've heard that there are no x marines before and I didn't want to say it, but fr some reason, the word former completely escaped my mind. So anyway, I'm glad you liked serving, +1 more positive experience.
AirborneMosinFan: I absolutely agree and I know it's going to take years of training if I plan to get anywhere, it's just one of my dreams. I do work out quite a bit and I'm beginning to get into long range shooting. Hopefully by the time I'm a grown man I'll be as prepared as I can be for "two weeks in hell"!

Hmmm two weeks eh

Scout-Sniper indoc is 2 weeks. The school used to be 10 weeks, it is now 13 weeks. After that, you may attend various other schools such a foreign sniper schools (Israel is example), as well as SERE, team leader course, etc.

Reqs:

1. Lance Corporal through Captain.
2. Infantry MOS or MOS 0203.
3. Vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes. Color blindness is discouraged.
4. Serving in or designated for assignment to a Scout Sniper billet.
5. Minimum of 12 months remaining on current contract upon completion of course
(Does not apply to reservist)
6. Must score a First Class PFT on course convene date.
7. Current rifle Expert. Must have qualified in the last fiscal year.
(Reservist can have a score three years old, but must be current Expert)
8. No courts martials or NJP within the last six months.
9. Minimum GT of 100.
10. No history of mental illness.
11. Must be a volunteer.
12. It is HIGHLY recommended, but not required, for the student to have completed the following MCI courses: Land Navigation, Patrolling, Calling and Adjusting Supporting Arms, and Reconnaissance Marine. It is also recommended but not required that the student have conducted basic Scout Sniper field skills: stalks, concealment, field sketches, range cards, range estimations, and firing of the M-40A1 prior to attending the course. Students should also posses a high degree of maturity, equanimity, and common sense.
13. Bottom line: the best, most experienced infantry you can send.

Marine Corps PFT: For a perfect score: 3 mile run in 18 minutes, 20 deadhang pull-ups(No Swinging), 100 sit-up/crunchs under two minutes.
Swim Qual: 500 meter swim using side or breast stroke, 50 meter swim holding a weight out of water, tread water for 30 seconds holding a weight out of water, no signs of panic.

I would not trade my time as a Marine for anything … but … join for the right reason. Not for job training, not for benefits, not to earn money for school. The intangible things are what will get you through and that make it the best decision of your life! Do it if you want to be the best no matter what. Do it to be part of something that matters, to be part of something bigger then yourself. Respect your parents but they cannot decide this for you.

^^+1

It is a calling. Knew that's what I wanted to do since I was 5. Also, The Commandant of the Marine Corps has issued an order that there are no former Marines anymore. I guess it is active and non active:cool:.
Told my son, who is also joining after the end of school, don't do it for Dad, do it because you feel it, because there is fire in your gut. As for your family, respect them but make your choice. Was the same for me and my family. Ask your recruiter about the delayed entry program.

The Title
It cannot be inherited nor can it ever be purchased. You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent. You alone and our own have earned it with your sweat, blood and lives. You own it forever. The Title
United States Marine
Still gives me chills even after 22 years:D

I have worked with a few Marines and they told me there are no "X-Marines or Former Marines, once a Marine always a Marine". They said that there were active duty Marines and non-active duty Marines. I don't care active or non-active God bless each one for what they do and are willing to sacrifice for us. The same sentiment goes out to all of our armed forces. Thank you all, God bless you. BTW I never served but my Dad (deceased 2002) was WWII Army Infantry.

Only way there is an 'ex' or former is if you dishonor the Corps.

You don't join because it's cool, you don't join because it's 'the family tradition', you don't join because you can't find work or your poor, you join because you hear the call and your heart tells you that you're destined to eat breathe and serve the Corps.

It's surreal when you graduate, you can't even begin to imagine it. And those of us who have answered the call and completed boot can hardly describe it without rambling. You'll be proud of yourself, and in time so will your parents. They can guide you on the path of being a better human being, but only you can take the steps to becoming a Marine.

As for scout sniper training, all the shooters I've ever met have been (censored, but your hint towards the word of the day is a flying rodent+fecal matter) crazy. Not like clinically insane, but just plain wacky... don't know what they put in their water but I think they share it with tankers. :D It's supposed to be tougher than all hell but nothing about the Corps is easy. I had a lot of good times, as well as tough, as a rifleman but it's nothing to pass up. Even if you don't qual for the RSS training, I wouldn't have changed my MOS for anything.

Good luck.

Hey, thanks a lot guys, really helps to hear all this positive feedback and how dedicated you guys still are. As for Recon SS training, I honestly belive if I truly devote my life to achieve the title, I can do it. I've been told I can do anything I set my mind to and that I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. In saying that, I'm starting to realize even if scout sniping isn't my destined path, I will be proud of myself no matter what I do in the armed forces. Thank you for the feedback, gentlemen.

I'm Army for 21+ now.

I would do it all again.

Just make sure the contract you sign is right for you and will put you on the path that you want to be on from the start. I don't know how the Marines do the contracting process but it's important to get it right for you.

Not even sure how the Army does it now, however, they used to guarantee you the job so long as you held up your end. Not long ago you could come right in to go SF for example if you met the requirments. Something to look into as needs for all the services wax/wane.

Start talking with the recruiters now so they know what you want to do since the slots will open/close over a period of time.

Good luck in your endeavor oneshotOG, there is no one I'd rather have back me up than a Marine.

BMCS (SW/DV) USN Ret.

I was hoping this would move toward the aspects of Scout-Sniper training, but it is more of a testimony of being a Marine, which isn't a bad thing, but is off topic.
