My letter to TIME Magazine ...

TO: letters@time.com

On the Don Imus show (just after 9AM Wed. 11/8) .. Margaret Carlson, from Time Magazine, said in reference to the uncounted absentee votes that are thought to contain a substantial number of military personnel that .. it's too bad that the election might be decided by a bunch of "TAX DODGERS!!!"

She thinks it is just "terrible" that military personnel may have chosen Florida as the home state of record, because they might pay less taxes there.

And now it is unthinkable to her that these "TAX DODGERS" may decide the election!

To his credit, Imus challenged her and expressed that people in the military shouldn't be characterized like that and that they were already receiving low pay and that if they wanted to claim Florida as their home for whatever reason that was their right.

I shouldn't have been, but was totally amazed that even a left wing liberal like her could say something like that. I have a child right now in the middle east at a location on high alert because of received terrorist threats. These people willingly put their lives at risk for our country every single day and this despicable witch calls them "TAX DODGERS" for exercising their rights.

One of my best friends and the father of my Godson, left New York and his business interests here and moved his family to Florida because of the political climate and the punitive taxes business people have to pay here. I suppose this honest Vietnam vet is also a "TAX DODGER" because he didn't stay in New York and keep paying excessive taxes for liberal programs that this Margaret Carlson person favors.

I strongly object and am frankly disgusted that anyone, much less a writer for TIME, could lump together Florida citizens serving their country in the military as "TAX DODGERS." Right at the moment you read this, many of those "TAX DODGERS" are out there in service to this nation. Some may be in difficult circumstances or days away from a fate like the crew of the USS Cole suffered. Would any of their dead or wounded qualify for Carlson's demeaning label? I'm sure their families would be comforted to know what Carlson thinks of them.

How low can you people get?

Let Time magazine and Comrade Carlson know how you feel about this!!!

Moron to a shockingly high degree.
I seem to remember my Army Pay was taxed dispite where ever I was at.

She has insulted the very people that have given her the freedom to spout drivel.

Note To Self: All my service time and fighting - was was NOT fighting for HER freedoms.

Typical of these cretins. Where does she think she would be if not for the brave men and women that defend this nation? Does she actually think she'd be better off under ChiCom rule?

George,

I hear ya! I think that she is accusing overseas military personnel of trying to avoid paying state income tax by living in Florida. Even if they are, so what?!? Too many are on food stamps because of Clinton-Gore anyway! What a bunch of BS!

Joe

Don't forget, it's immoral to pay lower taxes if you have the chance. If you were truly a moral person, you'd hate money as much as you love lil' bunnies and throw as much as possible at the feet of elected officials so they could afford to solve all your problems. If you have a problem and you have selfishly kept part of your income to waste on things you "like" and "want," you have no one but yourself to blame!

Ah, Carlson forces me to pull out my big gun ... Judge Learned Hand:

quote:
"Over and over again courts have said there is nothing sinister in so arranging one's affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible … nobody owes any public duty to pay more tax than the law demands; Taxes are enforced exactions, not voluntary contributions."

Judge Learned Hand[/quote]

'nuff said.

She called back to the Imus show this morning and apologized for her earlier statement. She said she was punchy from no sleep the day before, shouldn't have said it, doesn't believe it, and comes from a military family herself. I guess she had gotten some "feedback" for the statement.

Why do I think that Margaret Carlson's apology is a pile of bullflop, and that her initial statement is directly at the heart of her personal beliefs?

"The Capitol Gang" is regular TV watching fare for me every Saturday, and Mzzz. Carlson's rantings have to be endured. But, in all the years I've been watching, I have yet to hear her say one peep about Algore selling his vote on the Persian Gulf war. There were two nephews of mine over there, and Gore didn't seem to much mind if they lived or died as long as he got his 20 minutes of face time before the cameras.

Scr*w that b*tch.

I'll remember this bitch if I get back from some third world hell minus some friends due to her candidate's foreign policy. No, wait! I've already done that. Think I'll have a little talk with her about pay scales and taxes and exactly who guarentees her "right to free speech." Sometimes I wonder why I bother. Semper Fidelis....Ken.

I lived in FL for two years and personally met a lot of ultra wealthy New Yorkers who moved to Fl and paid for their Pelican Bay et al Condos with what they saved by not paying NY State income tax. Are they tax dodgers??? Sure they are. Is this bad?? of course not. Would Margaret Carlson do it if she could??

You have to be there when it's all over. Otherwise you can't say "I told you so."

Better days to be,

Ms. Carlson's attitude differs only in degree from that of the old East German government that shot those who tried to "dodge" socialism by fleeing to the West.

If Al Gore ever gets into office, expect a White House job to be waiting for her.

If being a 'tax dodger' is a felonious act I do believe that any of the people she is referring to would have a pretty good slander case against her. Maybe if a bunch of the military people got together and hired an attorney......

This made telly, 0900 chan 7, Prescott AZ this morning. Sam Steiger, mayor, read the meat of it and called Carlson a selection of appropriate descriptive names. He ripped her and others of her ilk.

Nikita Khrushchev predicted confidently in a speech in Bucharest, Rumania on June 19, 1962 that: " The United States will eventually fly the Communist Red Flag...the American people will hoist it themselves."

Y'all have covered the tax angle quite well. Let me add this:

IIRC, military personnel can not claim a home of record unless they have a physical address there.

Overseas, (1965 or so) I refused to give the personnel my parents' address. I force them to accept my German residence as my home of record. Those were "interesting" times....

When election time approached, I "found" my parents' address so I could vote by absentee ballot. BTW, my parents lived just west of Deland, Florida at the time. :D

Hmmm. I wonder if we could get this witch to attend the next Tailhook get-together.
(Insert Beavis & Butthead chuckle! ;) )
