I'd be most grateful if someone could provide me with the manufacturing date of my newly-acquired Colt Python. The serial number is V396xx
The finish is nickel plate.
Thanks!
When most people speak of older Pythons they usually mean the mid 1960s and earlier. The finish on the earlier guns was a bit better but even later Pythons are still very nice. At least, most are nice. The problem was that in the late 1980s quality control went to hell. I have seen some terrible Colts from this period. I have a nickeled Python that was clearly not polished properly in several spots and it shows through the finish. Not every gun is bad, just too many.
I would say the answer concerning quality is easy. Are you satisfied with your particular Python? If it looks good, feels good, and shoots good I wouldn't worry about it. If you are not satisfied after trying it out I would either get it fixed or trade it off. Date of manufacture doesn't necessarily tell what's good and what isn't.
