Manual safety on Ruger SR9

On my ruger LC9S the safety locks the slide from being racked and even if I pull he trigger on an empty chamber I can still engage the safety. Does the safety still operate on the sr9 if the gun is not cocked?

Interesting. Wonder why different operating system on the lc9s than the sr9. So would it hurt the gun to rack the slide on an empty chamber, then put safety on and insert mag so I would have to release the safety before racking in the first one?

Because all my guns are kept unloaded except my house gun which is in a safe. I like the option of locking the slide with the safety in and mag in so I would have to drop the safety to rack the slide in the event of me needing the gun. LI have kids in the house and want the extra layer of safety in case my son somehow got into the safe. I would never carry a gun like that, by the way.

Lots of PD's do that with their shotguns. Rack the forearm on empty chamber and then load the magazine tube so you have to press the button before chambering round.

1. If your son can rack the slide, he can also flip the safety off.

2. If you are concerned about your son getting at a loaded gun in your safe, and you should be, don't give him the combination.

True. But any kid (he's only 7) who has watched tv knows to rack a slide. I'm a gun guy and have been for a few decades. I'm not afraid of guns. I just like safety features on guns. I was pleasantly surprised to see the safety works on my new LC9-S with the gun decocked. But I don't want to use a 7 round super small gun like the lc9 as a home defense gun

And yes. My son does not know the combo to the safe!

Yet!
Kids are clever.
Maybe the best place for the loaded gun is in your possession and all the others to be empty and locked up.
Although, rather than worry about if/when he figures out how to get into the safe, it might be better to start his training about guns, gun safety and responsibilities.
A good friend solved this problem by taking his boys shooting from an early age, but with all privileges to be withdrawn with any funny business.
They valued going shooting far more than messing around against the rules.

Exactly my point. So while I intend to school him in the shooting sports, i know he might one day defeat the combo(although I don't know how. It's totally random). So I'd rather have something with all the safeguards I can get

Yes, if you rack the slide(cock the striker) you can flip the safety freely, so you CAN put in your mag & lock the slide shut, in that order. I don't see how you can turn the safety on an open slide if it locks the slide shut. If no one has tried this by Monday, I work in a LGS in my area & will try for you. As I did own an Sr9 but no longer do as my g17 has become my house gun.
