Man Stops Rioting Oakland Mob With the Sound of Shotgun Being Racked

As often as I hear that good old' Internet gun forum bit about "Just rack the shotgun and the badguys will run screaming," I thought it was kind of funny that this man actually did stop a rioting mob in Oakland in exactly that way.

According to the San Francisco Gate Phil Tagami was the developer working on the renovation of the Rotunda Building in downtown Oakland. As he was working, protesters from the OWS Oakland movement started spray painting graffitti on the outside of the building. Eventually they attempted to break into the building. Tagami stood in the lobby and brought out a 12ga shotgun and racked a round into it without pointing it at anyone and the protesters dispersed posthaste.

Okay, you has misrepresented the article and what happened. It wasn't just the sound of the shotgun that dispersed the people. It could well be argued that it was the visual sight of the developed pumping the shotgun.

"I was standing there and they saw me there, and I lifted it - I didn't point it - I just held it in my hands," Tagami said. "And I just racked it, and they ran."

In other words, he put on a visual demonstration with the shotgun to show that he meant business. Given that the rioters were outside of the building and apparently making noise, there is a very good chance that they could not even hear the gun being racked since the developer was inside the building.

To me I can have the volume on mute and when I see a shotgun pumped its as though I can hear it plane as day. There is a distinctness of meaning in the action of chambering a round.
I do believe this is something that Hollywood has magnified because no matter how many villains are blown off their feet there is a racking of the shot gun preceding the event.

And a good friend was wintering in Arizona some years back alone in his camper(he was detecting old homesteads) when several people approached his camper and he called out to them to leave and when they kept coming he racked the slide of his shotgun and they did an about face and left. He also relocated his camp site. It was early evening and he didn't want ETOH bravado to bring them back to him.

Just heard on the news that he's been arrested, convicted, and executed for several crimes, including having a gun in San Francisco, scaring the poor widdle chosen 99%ers, and having the audacity to think that property is worth protecting.

I'm Not Implying That the Sound of A Shotgun Being Racked Won't Deter Some Thugs...

...but, for the most part, the OWS crowds aren't home invaders "expecting" to run into armed homeowners either. I'm not inferring that the OWS protestors are thugs although, as with any big crowds, there will always be some trouble-makers. Fortunately, no one was hurt in that encounter. Hopefully, said trouble-makers learned a lesson regarding breaking and entering.

Several of protester crowd have mentioned bringing your AK or AK when legal to a protest. In fact, the Atlanta mayor pulled the plug there as someone was strolling around with an AK. There were also calls to bring your AR.

Thus, I wouldn't chortle about Shotgun Bob teaching a lesson. There are many disgruntled vets around that won't be scared by Shotgun Bob.

Blood lust posturing on either side is NOT productive.

These days, even in a Texas Beauty Shop, if you loudly present and cock the weapon you'd better be ready for whatever happens next. Don't do it less ya mean it. My Momma might just blast you outa your boots.:D
