Man shoots 2, wounds city marshal in Missouri

The Associated Press

BUNKER, Mo. (September 7, 2000 5:55 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - A man who was apparently upset with city workers shot two people to death on Thursday and wounded two others, including a city marshal.

Police were searching for a 49-year-old man armed with a high-powered rifle in the remote, heavily wooded area around Bunker, a town of about 50 people in south-central Missouri, said Capt. Chris Ricks of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The assailant may have been upset with the city public works department, he said.

The search area is part of Mark Twain National Forest, and Ricks said officers were having to climb hills just to get their cellular telephones to work.

"In an area like this, everybody know everybody," Ricks said. "There are no strangers - it's a very isolated community deep in the national forest. We got information on the suspect very quickly."

A city Marshal is sort of like the chief leo in a very small town. In addition to leo duties, he serves papers and picks up the dead rats from the streets. We had one here who was recently indicted, along with his son for pimping, drug dealing and receiving stolen property. His son likes to go around claiming to be a police officer but he is a door-shaker security guard.

These two mental giants recorded all of their drug dealing, pimping and fencing on video tape for all posterity.

I was watching a report on the local news on this story and the reporter on the scene stated in an ominous tone of voice that the suspect is armed with an SKS "assault rifle" and may be carrying as many as 2 boxes of ammo.Whoa!!2 whole boxes??What a maniac.

This story is very confused.
Bunker is indeed a very small village deep in the heart of the Ozarks.
The Missouri press is very unprepared and especially incompetent in covering events in that region. To them, it is just a big hole in the world, even if it is their own backyard.
It is unclear what type of man he is.
Why he shot two workers is unclear.
They apparently have not caught him yet.
My hunch is that if he was unprepared, they might get him soon, but that if he had some sort of preparation or has the help of any friends, he might be very hard to catch.

It's my understanding that the shooter was under the impression that the Public Works employees were trespassing upon his land. However, they were doing so under right of an easement. The shooter didn't recognize the easement (or didn't understand the concept) and felt the entry was intrusive. Still, it's a bad shooting.

Hey, fmjcafe, if his boxes are like my boxes, he could have a lot of ammo. You can get a whole lot of 7.62x39 in a .50 metal ammo box. :)

The whole deal sounds ugly. :( I wouldn't want to be the one creeping around looking for this guy in the woods. He's probably a damn good woodsman. The answer is probably infrared gear in the night.

According to the story in today's St. Louis Post Dispatch:
Yesterdsy evening, Gary DeWayne Watson, the man who shot and killed two city workers and wounded another, was found dead along the road to Loggers Lake, his rifle between his legs, an apparent suicide.
