Man on Trial

A man in my city is on trial for shooting his landlord in a dark basement of a commercial building. It does not look good for him. Yesterday's paper carried his own statement that he heard a noise in the basement and went down to check it out. Lights were out from a tripped breaker. He saw some kind of movement and fired into the darkness, killing the landlord.

By the man's own admission, he shot without having a clue who he was shooting at. Common sense and any basic instruction says "verify your target" before shooting. All he had to do was call out, he could have done that from outside the door pretty safely. Then he would have known who was there.

We should all keep these things in mind as we decide when or where to use force in our own dealings. We can't be fools and we should not give ammunition to the groups working against us. Cases like this and Florida have and will get plenty of coverage in the media, be sure of it.

You are correct. Just read a media report that Florida is reminiscent of the old west and that there are calls to rescind the "stand your ground" law.

Of course, if media reports are correct (and they are always suspect), Zimmerman violated the stand your ground law.

Sad thing is, most media will cheerfully report the events where people misuse a firearm while ignoring the hundreds of thousands who do not.

I wrote a letter to our local editor and posted on several forums & FB that the right to bear arms is not a license to stalk and kill, that it is for legitimate defense. I write hard in our defense and also hard against those who wrongfully use firearms and give the rest of us a bad name. Let it never be said that gun owners ignore abuses that some commit.

He could have called out, had a flashlight on his gun, called the police... all would have ended without bloodshed and incarceration. I think everyone agrees we should keep guns away from idiots, but it's hard to do that without overstepping.

See that is the problem with Crime Reports. They beget other crime reports.

What are we supposed to learn here, or are we supposed to line up and indict without the facts?
