Story:
http://myfox8.com/2013/12/27/handgun-accidentally-discharged-at-kernersville-restaurant/

Summary: Man reaches into his jacket pocket to pull out his wallet and gun falls out of same pocket and discharges when it hits the ground. He appears to have been carrying an older, not drop safe, pistol, with no holster, in his pocket with a bunch of other junk.

I thought this might be a useful discussion of what not to do and the video gives us a rare chance to see what actually happened. This man was engaging in a whole lot of questionable practices and mistakes like his may ultimately cause all of us who carry responsibly to be less welcome. Let's use this as an opportunity to make our own CHL practices safer and more responsible.

Part of CHL/CCW is responsibility. While I'm empathetic to the gentleman's incident and glad to see more CHL carry, this could have turned out very badly, and if on a jury would probably vote to take his CHL away.

From the story it sounds like the guy must have left and they're still looking for him. Even though no one was injured I think you still have at least a moral obligation to stick around and explain to the police what happened. I don't know if there's a legal obligation to do so, but if there is he should at the very least lose his ccw permit.

The same kind of thing just happened here a few days ago, lady dropped her .22 at a Lowe's store, it went off and a another person was struck in the arm. Could have been a lot worse. http://www.kgwn.tv/story/24359484/lowes-shooting-victim-is-listed-in-good-condition

I've said before and I still believe, I'm much more likely to be shot unintentionally by an idiot with a gun than I am intentionally by a bad guy with a gun.

I would say there is a legal responcibility. That bullet went somewhere and likely damaged someones property.

I'm not. Why should I be? He was irresponsible, he jeopardized people around him, and he took no responsibility for it. That guy's a potential liability to everyone around him, and to our cause.

This just happened on Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri last February at the base commissary no less! Here is a brief clip;

Doug Owen, KY3 News KY3 News 5:26 p.m. CST, February 8, 2013

FORT LEONARD WOOD. Mo. -- A man accidentally shot himself in the leg with his own gun on Fort Leonard Wood on Friday afternoon.
It happened at the post commissary.
The 72-year old man was taken by ambulance to the community hospital on the post. Nobody else was hurt.

That is just a portion of the story, but it should be noted that you are NOT allowed to have ANY concealed weapons on a government installation, even if you have a permit.

This, just like the OP's links shows that some people really shouldn't carry firearms and I am inclined to 100% concur with what Tom Servo said in the above post. People making foolish and reckless mistakes such as these gives the 'gun-grabbers' more of a foothold to put restrictions on the responsible CCW holders.

Except for National Parks. I just wish the VA hospitals would allow CC firearms to be left in the car.

@ Chris in VA

Installation meaning Military Base... I live next to the Mark Twain National Forest, and yes you are correct ;)

I was just stressing (but didn't mention) there are huge signs at the gates saying "All vehicles are subject to search, and no concealed weapons" That's at every base Ive been to anyway.

Even in national parks we are not allowed to carry inside any building where government employees routinely work. Ignoring the distinction between a parlk and a military installation, a PX would still be prohibited. As are ranger stations and visitor centers in national parks.

I agree with you about VA hospitals. The signs they recently posted prohibiting firearms on the grounds reference the federal law that prohibits firearms in buildings. IMHO having a firearm in a vehicle in the parking lot is 100% legal ... but I can't afford to become the test case.

The biggest +1. I have zero sympathy or empathy. Pro-gun folks who are careless with firearms do ten times the harm to the pro-gun movement as the most ardent anti-gunner.

It's the same reason I do not enjoy the zombie-themed gun stuff. Firearms are fun and fascinating, but they are also deadly serious.

Don't know if things have changed but when in I was in the USAF all personally owned firearms had to be kept at the armory. There was an exception though. You could fill out a form ( forget which one it is) and take it to the base commander to get approval to keep it at your home. If he signed off on it you were good to go.

When I got mine signed I asked about being able to carry concealed on base. He wrote up a letter giving me permission. Two copy's. One for me and one for the sp's.

Crash, in my case your first paragraph is correct. Concealed carry, though, is unheard of. I just had a meeting with the SP commander, FBI and antiterrorism cell to discuss it. None of them even entertained the thought. Interestingly enough I took my ccw course with the SP commander.

Do you mean a home on base? If not, that is absolutely mind boggling to me.
