This is a very sad story and a wake-up call to those who think that having a gun to protect yourself and home is not necessary. This can happen to anyone. What surprises me the most is that I live right next to this apartments and I didn't find out until today. Be ready, always be ready!

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man is dead following what police called a home invasion robbery at an Arlington apartment late Wednesday night.

Sgt. T.K. Waters with the Jacksonville Sheriff' Office said police responded about 11 p.m. to a call of a home invasion at the Carousel Luxury Apartments in the 2900 block of Justina Road in Arlington.

Police said some residents were having dinner with their front door open when an unknown number of men wearing masked entered the home and demanding money.

Police said a struggle ensued.

"At some point during that struggle, gunshots rang out, striking our victim," Waters said.

Jose Domingo Vasquez, 20, was taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center and pronounced dead. Another person was shot and taken to Shands. He was reported in stable condition.

Neighbors who heard the gunfire said the attack was especially frightening because it happened on Halloween night.

"All you can do is pray and hope the family gets through it," Thomasena Keitt said.

Witnesses said the gunman may have left the scene in a white pickup truck.

Police have no one in custody and were still investigating.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000

I was talking with someone on the phone tonight who has stopped turning on their light and giving out candy on Halloween. It suddenly ocurred to them that opening their door to a bunch of masked people after dark might be a bad idea...

I have to admit that I turn mine off when it gets late enough that the "kids" showing up are bigger than I am. :D

The video has no sound, at least for me.

Home invasions are too common around my area. My only defense is to always have my gun on me when I'm at home.

I live in Jax too but out at the beach. Havent heard about this story till I read it here. Sucks that all they have to go on so far is a white pickup.

I spent some time in El Salvador a few weeks ago. In San Salvador, the capital, people have huge steel doors that are slid shut in the evening and razor wire on the tops of their walls.

I'm afraid that this country is going to be the same if crime continues to increase in severity.

It's a shame when you can't leave your door open for a dinner party. The growing level of criminal derangement in this country is scary.

Halloween night I was packing when I gave out candy, checking the front steps before I opened the door.

Halloween two years ago, my wife and I had been married a few months and were living in her duplex in a bad(low income) part of town. We decided not to give out candy that year, and had locked the doors and kept the porch lights off. Nevertheless, during the course of the evening (even at 11pm!), people were knocking on our doors, big scary manly voices , yelling "TIRCK or TREAT, <expletive>!!". At the time all I had was a .22 revolver, and I kept it in sight the rest of the night. We moved a month later. I now have a second bedside gun and a shotgun availible.

Simple solution. Dress up like a cop and put a 1911 on your hip, answer the door & hand out candy. :)

Might even be effective for those cases where people go around casing the joint, looking through the bugeyes of the mask into your house to see if anything good is in there. ("OOH A FLAT PANEL TV! OOH!!! A glass-enclosed gun cabinet full of really cool rifles! I'll be back later." they think to themselves.)

Good chance that Wild’s hunch is correct.

Meanwhile, I wonder if there are stats on how many home invasion robberies are committed by people who don’t know the victims. I think a lot of cases would involve drugs, revenge, etc., but how many are random or the result of some idiot telling his buddies that his neighbors keep cash or have guns or some such?

We have not had a single trick-or-treater in the six Halloweens we've lived in our current house and maybe just as well.

In Omaha

Man killed in home invasion
Teilo Wynne, 31, became the city’s 29th homicide victim of 2007 when he was beaten and shot in the head while his longtime girlfriend and her son watched.

Romonica Hill, 32, Wynne’s girlfriend and mother of his 6-year-old daughter, said she, Wynne, Jason Turner, 29 and her son Ramon Hill, 16, were playing NBA 2K8 on an Xbox about 9 p.m. Thursday in the living room of her house at 4117 L St. She said a black-clad masked man suddenly appeared standing over them, pointing a gun at Turner. Hill began to run upstairs to her other son when two more masked, armed men contronted her in the dining room. They ordered her and son Ramon Hill to the floor. In the living room Wynne and his childhood friend Turner struggled with the gunman, who broke free and shot Turner in an elbow. Turner ran and received treatment at Creighton University Medical Center.

Hill said Wynne begged the man for his life. The gunmen wanted to know where some items were located. After Wynne said he didn’t know what they were talking about, a gunman pistol whipped him repeatedly in the head before shooting him in the face. The gunmen ran, shooting up the house as they fled.

I gotta wonder what "items" they were after. She said the dogs didnt bark at the guys leading her to belive they were there before. Makes me glad I live waaaay out side the city.

No, I would say it is a wakeup call to those who think that having having doors closed and locked is not necessary.

yeah, I live in Omaha (north Omaha, for those who know the area, not a great place to live), and the crime is getting ridiculous. 30 shootings in 30 days in July. Can't wait for the gunshow in Fremont. I'll be picking up a few new friends.

It' pretty sad when you have to live in constant worry and barricade yourself in your own home. Crimes are becoming more and more violent in nature. Just the other day I saw a show on tv about teenagers killing random people for the fun of it. It makes me sick to see what this country has become. I am always armed, except where prohibited by law (ie federal buildings, etc.) and it gives me piece of mind that if something bad should happen, I at least have the means to protect myself.

Hopefully, you have other means to protect yourself as well.

As for what this country has become, I have seen it written time and time again the same sentiment. Strangely, it is said by about every generation. Times stereotypically seem to have been better in the past and as we grow older, we are less apt to accept change. We also live in the age of information. Compared to just 25 years ago, we are now exposed to a tremendously largers amount of information through the media and the internet. So things may seem a lot worse simply because we hear about so much more.

There is no reason to live in constant worry and to barricade oneself in the home. There is every reason to take simple, prudent measures. Closing and locking the doors is common sense safety.

1992 my wife and I went for a drive in the country with our 1 month old son. We stopped at a viewpoint turnoff and were the only ones there. It was around 3:00 in the afternoon on a beautiful day, and the views were gorgeous. Then something told me to get out of there. I didn't see or hear anything, I just "felt" it, like a gut feeling. My pastor later told me it was the Holy Spirit protecting me. Anyway, as we got to the car, a passing vehicle stopped very abruptly and turned into the small lot. I could see two men in there, wearing "colors". As soon as I saw that, I barked "get in the car now!", and my wife didn't even hesitate; she placed my boy in the back seat without the seatbelt and we got in fast. The passenger of the other car had gotten out and was walking straight for us fast with an intent look. He was a gang banger, clothes and all. Our car was an old Mercedes 300SD Turbo Diesel that had to wait for the glow plug to light before firing up. That was the longest wait for a glowplug I ever had. (We got rid of that car soon after and never had diesel again). I backed up, then drove past him and his car, and he ran back to his car and they followed us for miles. Eventually they passed us yelling and laughing and turned off at another rest place. A few minutes later we saw a Highway Patrol car speeding code 3 towards that area. We assumed it was for them, and we prayed that any innocents involved would be OK if that was the case. Longer story short, I carry a gun now. That was a scary incident for us. I think they saw an opportunity for robbery, probably armed, and had it not been for the Grace of God, we could have been a statistic.

yeah, I live in Omaha (north Omaha,

Been there done that, used to live on 24th and camden. Also lived by the park, in a fine house, had a glass room on top, fireplace etc. Was out cooking in the back yard, saw a young guy run down the alley with a handgun, very soon cops ran past, heard shots, ambulance came and took that guy away. We moved soon after, now I am outside of Crescent across the river. No worries there mate. Dogs warn us of strangers, no neighbors for 1/4 mile and we are all friends and bikers on my road.

Things that go bump in the night face the barrel of a weapon; period. Halloween and firearms is an extremely poor mix.

As for home invasions are concerned, it makes little sense to not remain armed within your own home. I fail to comprehend any other method... Personal protection is a MARTIAL ART.

To consciously choose to disarm one's self when in the comfort of his/her home is the equivalent of stating "I can only use my judo when I'm wearing my gi in the dojo..." Not!

As the dollar collapses there will be a spike in home invasions. Mark my words.

Stay safe!

to make my long story short when my famliy first moved to our current home (in a city outside chicago) we would have these mexican guys pound on our door at 3 in the morning on a saterday wanting to party on the 3rd saterday i answered the door with my mossberg ( wearing nothing but my tighty whites)
needless to say they never came back after that it still cant figure it out was it the mossberg or the sight of me in my underwear

( wearing nothing but my tighty whites)

rookie move cousin - kick em off when you rack the slide, they can't protect you and lint can fester in a wound. Fear factor is higher when not worn

On Oct 31 2006 my neighbor and good friend was shot to death on my doorstep. He had momentarily escaped from home invaders and was looking for me hoping to get some assistance. Unfortunately I was 40 miles away throwing darts.

So I too keep a means of defense handy at all times in the casa. I prefer not to answer an unexpected knock at the door without a revolver (they work better at contact range) or at least a Trailmaster Bowie.

A small revolver can be held behind the back ready to go and slipped into a back pocket when it is determined that no threat exists. Your unexpected guest never need know.

Sometimes we need to remember that crime goes up on any Holiday. Stay safe.
