Malfunctions

The IDPA club I was shooting at today
requires shooters "top off" their guns.
Makes sense.
However, when I used proven eight round
mags with proven ammunition, I would have
malfunctions. It happened three times,
always one of the middle rounds of the first
magazine.

Since it was during competition, I was not
in a position to analyze..But it seemed as
though a round was not being picked up and
fed. I would have to rack the slide to
continue. Was using a gov model. No malfs
during those times I didn't top off or used
seven round mags.

I know I'm leaving out specifics, but when
it happens during a string of fire, the mind
tends to be more occupied with getting back
into action. From my limited description
do you think it may have been due to having nine rounds in my gun? Perhaps something
about too much pressure on the magazine
spring?

I really haven't a clue.

Sport, I have had 8 rounders act the same way and not necessarily with a 9th round in the chamber. About the only consistent reason I can see for this happening is that when the follower bottoms out the front dips a little allowing the bullets to do the same. I've cured a couple of them by removing a little material from the bottom of leg of the follower. George

This sort of thing is sometimes caused by interference between the follower and the spring or between the follower and the inside of the mag. I suggest taking the mag down and checking it out. If the floor plate comes off, checking is easier, of course.

George/Jim,

Thanks for the assist.
What exactly am I looking for in terms of
the follower or follower-spring set-up?

Do I want the magazine in the gun so I can
cycle rounds or out of the gun to observe
the mechanics?
