Making my own grips?

I'd like to try my hand at making some grips for my Sig 220. Looked around, couldn't find anything I liked.

How plausible would it be to fabricate some using materials available at Home Depot, Lowes etc? Don't have to be pretty, just functional.

give it a try

I made a set of maple grips for my EAA Witness pistol a couple of months ago. I replaced the factory black rubber grips and if I do say so myself, they look pretty good. I will try to post a pic soon.

You can find some nice wood to make grips out of at a knife-making supply store. Try some very hard exotic wood like cocobolo, pau ferro, zebrawood, ebony, or maple.

Making your own grips is the best way to get the perfect feel for your weapon. I made a set out of cocobolo for my Sig 220. Just take your time. The process I use is: 1. Form the frame side first. That way, you know the exact parameters of the fit you need. 2. Rough form the contours you want on the panels. 3. Test fit, sand, test fit, sand, test fit, sand, test fit, sand....
4. Finish sand to 220 or whatever you like, finish with something nice. I prefer danish oil. It's not as tough a finish as most, but you don't have to worry about dull spots when you use them or carry them. Plus, you can add a coat of finish if it starts to look a little dull. Otherwise, you can finish them with anything - lacquer, polyurethane, even epoxy.

Excellent. I'll check out the Ebay offerings. Sure would be nice to finally have an ergonomic grip for my 220, similar to my CZ.
