Making Excel Sheet of all guns

Hey,
I am making a Excel sheet for all my guns that I own. Am I missing anything though? Right now for the categories for each firearm I have it is.

Type of Firearm|Brand|Model|Caliber|Serial #|Date purchased/received

Can you think of anything else I should include in this?

Thanks!

If you can, an accurate round count might be useful if you encounter a part failure. You may want to also include any modifications & mod date.

This might sound dumb, but how about 'why' you bought it? If you own/buy lots of guns, you may forget after a few years why you bought your 15th 1911, or 6th BHP... know what I mean?

A single sentence to remind you of why... "price to low to pass up", "been looking for this particular gun for years", "has a special finish that was only available for whatever reason", "came with a set of grips worth more than the gun", "came with a scope worth more than the gun", "the gun is OK... the stock is beautiful!".

You get the idea. :p

Cheers,
C

Not dumb! Excellent in fact. There could also be a "where" category which could indicate which gunshop you purchased from ....or private individual sold, traded with or from whom you inherited it from.

You need a column for what you paid, and a column for estimated value (update at least once a year) for insurance claims purposes.

Also add a column where you can attach images of the gun that show serial number, condition, etc.

Another, to my mind, very useful bit of information to know 5 years down the road. ;)

Also add a column where you can attach images of the gun that show serial number, condition, etc.

One could even create a link in the spread sheet that opens to a specific stored photo file... so you don't have to hunt for them.

I have a column for condition (%) and one for additional info (extra barrels, etc.) as well. I don't have a column for price incase my wife hacks in!:D

I suggest putting your initials or mark somewhere on each of your firearms in a hidden location that only you know about, and noting that in your files.

Maybe two more columns,,,

What I paid for the gun.

What I told my wife I paid for the gun.

Just to keep your story consistent over the years. ;)

But seriously you might want to make a column for "Miscellaneous Information".

Nice thing about Excel,,,
You can always add a column if you think of one at a later date.

Also add column(s) for accessories you've attached to the gun, scope (and scope serial number if it is a high-dollar model), etc.

Here is my header from my spreadsheet...

Store |Date of Purchase||Price|Make|Year|Model|Model #|Caliber|Serial|Optics|Optics Model#|Notes

In notes, I might state how many magazines, if it has a holster...that sort of thing.

Price paid - to help ballpark the value of the item in the event of theft or for your estate.

Unfired condition (if that's the case)

Good one Doyle,,,

That's a good idea there,,,
I have replaced some wood stocks with Pachmayers,,,
It would be good to keep a reminder that I have the original stocks and where they are stored.

In addition to the other info mentioned I'd keep several pictures of each gun (not in the spreadsheet of course) to help identify it if stolen.

Overall description
Distinguishing marks (dings/dents/scratches/engraving/finish wear/etc)
Special considerations (low serial number, rare finish, unusual barrel length, original box, factory prototype, etc)

Agree with Mike Irwin. I have done this with my horological and gun collection. This should provide my spouse with some reference point when I depart or possibly end up unable to appreciate/enjoy them.

The day could come when we are here in the body but not here in our mental capacity. :(

My spreadsheet includes date of purchase; make; model; caliber; type (pistol, revolver, rifle); barrel length; serial number; seller; price paid; date sold (this column is mysteriously blank); sold too (also blank); sale price (blank).

I keep a separate spreadsheet, with a worksheet for each firearm, in which I log shooting -- number of rounds by date, malfunctions encountered, repairs made, etc.

I have a spreadsheet only for the basics of each gun, but a detailed account of my ammo stash, which is more relevant. Before cruising gunbroker or a gunshow, I do a quick check of the list to see which ammo I am lacking. I don't need a reminder of which guns I am lacking, I know that by heart. :)
