Make your own holsters?

Where can I get information about how to make leather handgun holsters. I would like to try to make a couple of holsters - nothing fancy, just something for use on the farm or range (maybe a belt slide or two). What thickness leather, what type of stitching, what type of rivets, and where do you get the stuff. Thanks.

I usually just shove an auto in the belt if I don't have a holster for it.

John Bianchi wrote a nice book on the subject, I no longer have it but you might try a search at your library.

Go to tandyleather.com and look around. Their catalog is full of the requisite materials and they have a few books that will aid you in stitching, etc.

Of course, all the leather and books won't help a bit. You have to screw up a dozen times, at least, before you get something even halfway decent. :D

what vaughnt said.
tools are cheap but you can get away with a hammer and a finishing nail to make holes
and fishing line to start with(yes it will cut the leather eventually)if you can try making a few out of plastic milk bottles first, not as supple as leather but, makes a field expedient for a pocket sheath quite quickly.(plus duct tape of course)

if you are flush with cash , get a fake platic training gun of your type for making your form. or carve one out of wood if that is your pleasure.

the main thing is to just do it... you will be dissatisfied with your first 10 or so efforts. after that you can see about classes or books for fine details. look at a bunch of holsters. look at details. ask yourself "how the heck did they do that?"
have fun, when you get done you will have a custom made holster to fit YOU.

ps: look in the yellow pages under leather supplies
