Make me want this varmit rifle...

Ok, I was at the old gun store earlier today looking for something to buy myself for my birthday in 2 weeks, I was originally thinking muzzleloader, but as I perused the used gun rack I saw a pretty good looking Savage 24F in .222 over 20ga. for $250, not in perfect condition, but still nice. My only 2 other guns thus far are a NEF 12ga. parder (they call me master of the single shot) and a semi-auto .22lr. This Savage seemed like it'd be a great varmit rifle/shotgun combo, giving me the best of both worlds. What do you guys think about the 24F and this combo in particular?

Also since I have a buddy who works at the store, and he can get 20% off used guns once they've been on the floor for 21 days, which would bring the price to about $200 (if it's not gone by then, I'll have to see if I can find out how long it's been there if I decide I need it). So I'd appreciate any opinions you guys have on the gun and whether it's worth $200 or $250 or not. Thanks.

Oh and also I've heard the .222 is a good cartridge to reload, which I don't do as of yet (nothing to reload for), but I suppose it might be a good one to get started with. Thanks again.

Maybe part of both worlds; maybe mediocrity from both worlds; maybe the worst of both worlds; definitely not the best of both worlds.

If you want a varmint rifle, you don't want a shotgun attached to it; you want a heavy, free-floated barrel, bolt action; light trigger; good scope, etc., etc., ad infinitum.

Of course, we're not talking about $250, either.

The .222 is an inherently accurate cartridge, and the 20-gauge will do quite nicely on upland birds. Dunno about the tight-group aspect of the combo, though.

For somebody limited in funds, and who doesn't go hunting as the primary passion in life, it's no bad way to go.
