I have been having trouble with my East German Mak.
The story is this:
Every few rounds the firing pin (fp) seems not to strike the primer hard enough.
I have cleaned the fp channel, replaced the fp and replaced the hammer mainspring. Also, I have tried Fiocchi, winchester for Mak, and various russian rounds.
It seems to gum up, HELP! :(
 
What makes you think the fp is not striking hard enough? When I use one there were times when a second strike would be necessary to detonate the primer. Also, I thought the Makarov was designed for harder primers. When using US made ammunition, the one I had one it would leave a slight dent on the primer if you chambered a round and then ejected the un-fired round.

I'm also curious about where it is that things "gum up". Are you lubricating the fp & fp channel? Wiping it dry or leaving it oiled? I think the fp & channel should be bone dry. I'd clean & lube with Breakfree, let it sit for 10-30 minutes, then wipe everything dry before assembly (I'd leave the rails slightly wet, but everything else dry). If it's dry it might get dirty, but if it's "wet" it stands a chance to get gummy.

Is the slide going fully into battery? The Mak has very little firing pin protrusion, so if the slide is not fully closed, it won't fire. Sometimes, the hammer falling is enough to close the slide but not to fire the round so a second trigger pull fires the cartridge.

Check every time before you fire to see if the slide is fully forward. If not, you have the problem. The exact solution is another issue.

Hmmm. replaced fp, replaced mainspring.
It actually sounds to me like the safety lever may be moving under recoil. It wouldn't have to go all the way to safe to interupt hammer fall.

Does the safety seem fairly easy to manipulate? You can increase tension on the safety by prying up (slightly) on the detent spring. Unless the spring is broken, in that case just replace the whole safety.

I am new to this sight. Looks like I found a good one.

I have tried wet, slightly wet, dry etc.
It looks like it gathers debris at the fp level just at the exit. This may be normal?

Cross your fingers. I would like to use Mak as my carry during the spring/summer months.
 
I hope you can get it figured out. I have been carrying my 1979 Bulgarian Makarov since Ohio let us CCW.
I have owned a total of six. They have all been 100% reliable and super accurate.
 
I had the same problem with my EG Mak. I replaced the safety/detent spring, and the gun has shot flawless ever since. Apparently the safety was partially engaging after shooting, and this corrected the problem.
