Makarov Safety

Is a Makarov safe to carry chamber loaded safety off? I am looking to buy a NIB Bulgie but I do not like safeties (I am a leftie). Thanks

mrat, There was a long thread over at Makarov.com about that a while back. IIRC, one Makarovnik even pulled a bullet and loaded the empty case, with live primer, in his Mak and performed an at home drop test on a rubber mat. His Mak never fired that primer with the safety off. Post the question over there, I'm sure they'll be happy to answer you :) http://www.hotboards.com/plus/plus.mirage?who=mak12

mrat,

Yes. It's safe.

Makarov is a double action semi-auto with a "decocking" feature. It's specifically designed to be carried with the "decocker" off and one in the tube.

With the decocker/safety "off" the hammer is physically blocked from contact with the firing pin. BUT, the firing pin is free floating rather than spring loaded. If dropped from the top of the Empire State Building or from a 747 at cruising altitude -- with a soft primer -- the intertia MIGHT make the gun discharge.

But the gun would have to land on the muzzle, in which case you'd have a hole in the floor. I've been shooting since 1957 and haven't dropped a gun yet. Nor have I been around anyone who has dropped one.

People get struck by lightening (or win the lottery) too . . . What are the chances?

I have 5 of those ugly things. And I luv em :)
I even have a cpl double stack russians. I've never seen one go off by dropping it( tried it once to test it, never went off.
