Makarov Safety Question

Today, I was familiarizing myself with the operation of my new Makarov. I found that if I racked the slide and then engaged the safety with the hammer still back, the hammer would drop. Is this proper functioning?

I'm assuming that if a cartridge was chambered, the pistol would fire even though I'm engaging the safety. I'm glad I noticed this fact with an unloaded gun.

No, it's a decocker safety, the gun won't fire. Great gun, mine is my favorite shooter. Best gun for the money I ever bought.

Using the safety is the only safe way to lower the hammer on a Makarov. The safety puts a block between the hammer and the firing pin as it drops the hammer so there is no chance that the pistol will fire. Make sure the pistol is unloaded, then fiddle around while looking closely at what happens. It's a very simple but very effective setup.

The "safety" on a Makarov does not allow cocked and locked carry. It is really a decocker so it is supposed to drop the hammer. If you have doubts just make sure the gun is pointed in a safe direction when you decock. In fact that is what you should do anytime you decock a pistol, in case the decocker/safety is not functioning. If you use the decocker as a safety all it does is block the trigger, slide, and hammer.

Let us know how it shoots.
