Makarov - Safety function

A friend of mine picked up a new Bulgarian Makarov at the local gun show today. While examining it back home, we were startled to find that if the hammer is already cocked back and you apply the safety, the hammer immediately releases. This happens without squeezing the trigger and we couldn't tell if the hammer rebounded without striking the firing pin or not. This left us both uneasy so I thought I'd query those TFLers with some Makarov experience. Is this normal function for the Makarov and would it fire a round if one were in the chamber? If this is a defect, I'll advise my friend to take it back to the show tomorrow ...Dan in GA

RELAX.

It is both safety and decocker (like a Beretta 92).

The safety blocks the hammer from hitting the firing pin when activated.

If worried, stick a pencil, eraser end first into the barrel of the UNLOADED pistol
and pull the trigger, while holding the gun 45 degrees.

The pencil should go flying.

Repeat, but don't pull the trigger. Use the safety to decock and see if it happens again.

No? GOOD.

Yes? GET THE HELL RID OF IT!

Hope your friend paid no more than $115-125 for that bulgie.

Understand the adrenalin rush!!
The Mak safety is also a decocker. The hammer is blocked before it can get to the firing pin if the safety is selected when the hammer is cocked. No need to take it back, although if you are still bothered by that feature, you can send it to me. My other Makarovs could use some new company.
