Makarov question

Now you all have gone and done it with all these posts on the Makarov! Like I need a reason to buy another gun. Anyway looks like I am in the market for one of these commie Mak's. I was at one of my local gun shops today and they had a Russian Makarov, but was stamped with Big Bear imports or something like that out of Texas. Is this a new production gun?,or is this typical with being from another country. The box has Russian writing etc,but was imported through this place in Texas. Was wondering if this is the way to go or not. Was really looking for a German one,but thought I would ask the people who know..Thanks..PJ

Often the Russian Makarovs have adjustable sights. Although that is nice and one of my Russian Maks was the most accurate of all that I have shot (about 30 at a guess) the adjustable sight itself has not proven to add to accuracy for me.

The Russian Maks often have a heavier recoil spring and I suspect that is a good thing to use when using the slightly heavier and slightly faster Russian ammo.

The finish on Russian Maks is not as good as the East German; but then as far as I know none of the other Maks are as well finished as the EGs.

In summation; go ahead and get one (or better yet -- a few) of the Russian Makarovs and keep looking for East German ones too. Ideally, in my opinion, a good collection of Makarovs would be a selection of about 1000 Makarovs in each of the variations... :) I'm not there yet, but I wish I was. ;)

Take care,
Jody

yup, well, mine, a russian makarov, one of the first imported, when they had the red bakelight grips, has KBI stamped on it...so, what i'm sayin is, it doesn't matter who imported it, all the makarovs, russian, german, chinese, bulgarian (supposedly the finest) all of them are gonna be good buys. The countries mass produced these guns, and importers are simply buyin huge lots of them. so, who imported the gun, in my opinion, really has no effect on the functionableness of the gun. just decide if you want a new one, or one from an arsenal and go from there. and by the way, did you know there are nickel plated makarovs? they sure are pretty, i saw one down in new orleans but didn't have the bucks to buy it... good luck!

If you can find a Russian one, BUY IT!!! :) :)

Big Bear Sports out of Dallas, TX carries Russian maks. I think it was a production run for them as the serial numbers all begin with BB. I like mine real well with the adjustable sight. Don't much care for the DA trigger, but it works. Click, bang all day long.

I have or have had Chinese (Norinco),Russian
(Baikal, the ones Big Bear imports) and Bulgar
ian Maks. They all functioned flawlessly.
The Russian was my least favorite though,
as the bluing was atrocious. It actually started to rub off while being cleaned with
a toothbrush. The grips were unattractive
and the adjustable sights detracted from con-
cealed carry comfort. Surprisingly the chinese Mak had the best finish, a deep, rich
blue like you used to see on Colt revolvers.
The Bulgarian is certainly alright, decent
finish and reliable, though I'd like some
more presentable grips. Anyway, the Mak fans
on this site are correct. It's difficult to
go wrong with a Mak.

Oh I don't know, The fit and finish on my Russian Mak is flawless. Except for a little holster wear, the blueing is just as deep as when I bought it 5 years ago. Mine came with black plastic grips that are very comfortable, and attractive. I agree with you about the adjustable sights though. Even though I adjusted them for my eyes, the small front sight makes them sort of useless. I suspect that they were added just to get enough BATF importation points. I treat them as just a "set, and forget" option. I carry mine as my "Sunday go to meet'in" pistol or as a back up to my P99.

I never need another reason to buy a gun :)
I'd keep looking for the E.German Mak though.
I keep hearing those Arsenal models are pretty good. I think these are the new Bulgarians. Gun Emporium that I frequent just found a supply of those. Owner said they were selling pretty good with good feed back coming back to the shop.May buy one of these myself in the future.
To many guns not enough money :D

Happy Shooting :)

The Mak gurus will likely chastise me, but here goes.

There are two Bulgie Mak types currently being sold. Some are unissued military Maks and the other are commercial versions with a squared trigger guard. Both bear the Arsenal stamp.

On the advise of some folks over at www.makarov.com I opted for the military version as it supposedly has better fit and finish. I'll let you know what I think when I get mine from www.jcarmory.com

Well, I was going to post this same question. The only difference is that I have found one East German Makarov for $149 shipped and a second EG Mak with 2 sets of grips, holster, dies, brass, bullets, and 4 mags for $225 shipped. Both are private party offers. Are these good deals or should I pass? Thanks.

From what I've seen if they're in excellent condition either EG Mak is a good offer.
