What do I need to know about these pistols?
How you field strip and clean them?
Best ammo?
Holster?

I second that. Karl's got a great little cottage industry going there for Makarov owners.

As houndawg says, http://www.makarov.com is a wealth of info.

Field stripping? It's a breeze since the Mak has so few parts and has a fixed barrel. Make sure the magazine is out and the gun is unloaded. Take the safety off. Pull down on the trigger guard and place a pencil in the crook of the trigger guard's end (to prevent it from springing back into the gun). Pull the slide all the way back and then up. Keep tension on the slide! Allow it to move forward until it slips off the barrel and spring. Remove the spring and grips. That's about it for a basic field stripping.

I recommend the Ultimate Makarov Guide for a complete run down. This useful manual can be bought from makarov.com.

Best ammo? The cheap Russian stuff sold at makarov.com (through Dan's Sporting Goods) is great for target practice. For defensive carry, get some Corbon HP. If you can't find Corbon, Hornaday makes a good HP.

Best holster? Fobus paddle. Best holster I own, hands down. Keeps the gun high and close and is light as a feather. I can't wait for Fobus to start making a holster for the P95.

Get a Mak and shoot it. You won't be disappointed.

Since this seems to be a trend here, I will also recommend Makarov.com for all your Mak needs.

Though instead of purchasing the Ultimate Makarov Guide, I'd advise you to take a look at this section of Mak.com. It shows how to disassemble the pistol in language clear enough even for me to understand.

As for ammo, Dan sells green box Russian LVE FMJ for $100/1000 and $53/500 with $10 shipping west of the Mississippi river. I haven't shot any of it myself, but judging from the people at Mak.com's message board, it's excellent for target practice. He also sells Barnaul hollowpoint ammo for just a touch more.
Keep in mind that Barnaul is the only HP ammo known to feed reliably in Maks.
