Makarov Accuracy

Well, now that we have come to the conclusion that Maks are golden, what kind of accuracy are you guys getting? Specifically, have any of you bench-rested them? I have heard several people mention that the accuracy is "shocking" and "as good as any full-sized auto I've ever shot". What are we talking about here? 2-3" at 25 yards? If that is the case, then Maks are the deal of the decade.

I train myself, program my mental computer that is, by shooting in a sand pit; there I can EXACTLY see my misses quite easily as they splash the sand.

I am 50 now; eyesight and steadiness are NOT what they were when I competed internationally at the age of 19 through 21; however Sunday I shot 50 rounds with one of my German Maks...

I was using my favored Norinco FMJ and shooting off hand at 160 yards. Our target was a 12" metal disc set up on a near vertical part of the sand pit wall. My best magazine was 6 out of 9 hits on the metal disc. I had two (my fault) flyers and one near miss. At that distance the hits were still point of aim. My worst magazine was still 3 hits and the rest within a foot of the target.

If I were shooting at paper, per my experience, the lack of mental feedback from shooting would have given me far less accuracy.

It would be fun to see just what these miraculous pistols are capable of from a Ransom Rest!!!

I found my Mak to be very accourate with any 95gr ammo and less so with 109gr (not sire if it was extra blast and recoil or mechanical lack of accuracy). Feeds ANYTHING incl. flying ashtray Corbons and aluminum-cased Blazers. Heavy gun, though, at 24oz or more, depending on the variant.

I typically shoot my Mak at either 15 or 25 yards. At 15 yards, I can typically shoot groups in the 2-3 inch range. At 25 yards, all rounds are in the 10 ring on a standard B27 silhouette. The fixed barrel makes for surprising accuracy in such a small gun.

Thanks, all. That's the info I'm looking for. Do any of you have any idea of the ballistics? The S&B data sheet says that it pushes their 95 grainer at 1017 fps. They have that coming out of a 4.5 inch barrel. Is there even a gun that has a four and a half inch barrel that shoots the 9 x 18? What about the TCW/Wolf 109 gr. ammo? Any idea of velocity out of a Mak? Anyone ever chrono the Russkie fodder?

After reading all of the posts on how neat a Mak is, I bought one at the local gun show last weekend. It is the Bulg. unissued type.
I bought some really generic looking Russian ammo in a blue box, bullet wt. 6g, for $6.00 a box. I was REALLY surprised how accurate that gun is. I went through 2 boxes, and just about everyone that was at the range tried it out. At 30', there was only one out of the black (nra 50'slow fire target) and that was mine. I'm really impressed. Best $149.00 I have spent in a long time.

Regarding ammo - I shoot Russian made ammo
only in my Russian made Mak. Just had no need
to try anything else - it works great. Wasted more than 1,300+ rounds - no failures
of any kind. I do have a few rounds of Hornandy Custom 9x18, just in case...

Now, there is quite a bit of difference between 95 gr. ammo and 109 gr. ammo made
by TCW (same as Wolf). 109 gr. is considerably hotter ammo, and probably a bit less accurate than 95 gr. But 109 gr. seems to have a lot of power. It seems this 109 gr.
9x18 TCW is not too far from standard velocity 9 mm Luger. Would recommend it for
guys who like the feel of the power in "small
package"...

I fired my Mak at the range today using some PMC ammunition. I was gleeful that at 50 feet it shot a group from rest under 2 inches with crude sights. Not a target gun the Mak's I see at the range are indeed perfomers and a bargain at the price. I would like to think some nice communist inspried country would produce a version with a side magazine release, but I can easily adopt the standard European bottom release. I shall purchase at least one more. How can one not do so for the price?
Cheers!!!

My Mak puts lead where I want it to go. :)

Got about 400 rounds through my mak and this thing just keeps getting better. It is still a crude little sucker, but shoots strait as the day is long. I just really like shooting this thing. Will never be a carry gun for me, but I sure feel good about hitting what I am pointing at. :) At 7 yds, I am getting 1" to 1 1/2" groups shooting SA.
