I'm thinking about getting a makarov pistol. Can someone tell me witch one ,if eather .380 or .9mm is a better choice. Thanks S.J.

The 9mm is not chambered for 9mm Luger (9X19) but 9mm Makarov (9X18). The 9mm Makarov is better for self defense because it is more powerful, though the hottest 9X18 (Corbon) is only slightly more powerful than Corbon's .380 ACP. The .380 round may be slightly more accurate, inherently, than the 9X18 but I suspect there are big differences in accuracy from Mak to Mak so this point may not be important. Both rounds can be purchased el-cheapo from Wolf/TCW. Overall, I think the answer to your question is that it really doesn't matter. It's just that some serious Makarovniks would say if it ain't chambered for 9X18, it ain't a Mak.

I bought my mak chambered for 9x17mm (.380ACP) because at the time it looked like our buddy Bill was going to do one of his famous "trade aggreements" with Russia, and cut off all ammo imports. (He might just do that yet. The ATF does not like the Wolf ammunition company. :( ) However, he did succeed in killing off most of the Russian economy by banning the importation of Maks. As long as Bill or Al are any where around, the 9x18mm round could be in deep do-do!!!

Mak ammo is available from US companies. Also, it's not like a "deadly assault weapon" caliber -- like 7.62 X 39. There is tons of Mak ammo in the US, so the supply won't dry up any time soon. Finally, a Mak barrel press runs about $40. Pressing a .380 barrel into a Mak is a ten minute job and all that's required for a caliber change.

.380 is not very accurate past about 20 yds. Mak is a better caliber choice.

As noted above, "a Mak is not a Mak unless it's chambered for 9mm Makarov." You can bring up this topic on www.makarov.com. They'll vote for 9mm Makarov.

I have a .380 mak and I like it alot. It's plenty accurate. Also I reload all my ammo and I can get alot better deals on brass and bullets in .380. I never see those deals on 9x18 brass and bullets. As for the differance in power its not that much and I keep a .357 loaded at home anyway.
