Mak vs Walther PPK/PPKS

Which is best in reliability, accuracy and overall? I have owned about 6 PPKs/PPKSs over the years both USA and French made models in blue and SS. All in .380cal. I have really tried to like them as I like the size and appearance but none have been reliable. The closest was one would feed Fed Hydrashoks well. I also end up with a bloody hand after shooting (slide or hammer bite). I have owned 2 Maks (both Russian) one in .380cal and one in 9x18. Both have been very accurate and one was 100% reliable and the other has been reliable after a brief break-in. So my vote goes to Mak however I would like to try the Walther in .32cal.

The comparison is more (financially) valid if you say PPK/PPKS vs FOUR Maks.

I've found the Maks to be better than the PPK/S (even the german made one I once owned) in overall reliability and ergonomics. The Walther, of course, had a much better finish but that didn't do much for it's operation... just it's re-sale. :D

Make mine lean, mean, and 9x19!

HAving lived in a household with an ugly Bulgarian Mak (mine) and a nice PPK/s (GF's), I'd say Mak is better in every which way except for the sights.

Never shot a Makarov. Mainly because my PPK never gave me a reason to.

Make mine a Walther anyday.

Gremlin,

If you've never shot a Mak how do you know how it compares to a Walther? ;) Try one. You'll be surprised by its accuracy, reliability and balance.

So many pistols, so little money.

I spent about 35 years TYING to love the PPK and PP Walthers in .22, .32 and .380. I did have one early German PPK in .32 that was fairly reliable and quite accurate. However since it was only fairly reliable I sold it. It was the best one I ever owned of several hundred. I suggest that there has most likely never been a reliable PPK or PP by Walther at any time. In fact that is why the Makarov was made according to historical writings.

I have heard many folks say the Walther they own is reliable -- these are the same sort of folks that would think Windows or a Harley Davidson are reliable -- they just refuse to let facts get in the way of opinion... OR they don't use them. In the case of Walther PPK/PP, Windows and Harleys they are perfect in every way unless you use them frequently and want to depend on them instead of just loving them.

Jody,

I agree with everything you said but one! Although I have not had hundreds of PPK & PPKS I have had several and got rid of every one. I liked lots of things about the piece but reliablity was not among them. I ultimately also gave up on the cartridge as a self defense choice. I might just coincidentally add that my experience with my P88 is the exact opposite and I still have it. I would also not hesitate to own a P5.

Windows sucks! I only use it because of the availability of software for it.

Harleys....Now that's another matter all together. :)

I have owned three German PPs in 32acp and a French ppk/s in 22 LR. All have been completely reliable. All four were also capable of hammer bite. All four were smaller than my East German Makarov and had better finishes. With this said I really enjoy my Makarov which is more accurate and is totally reliable. Of note is the Makarov has better single and double action trigger pulls. I think the current crop of Bulgarian Maks are the best deal out there. Regards, Richard.

I too like some Walthers; I love my S&W 41 which is really a Walther; I loved my P5 compact which was small, powerful and ACCURATE; and I liked the P88 well also. AND I would love to shoot the Walther .308 sniper rifle!!!!!!! My favorite gun of all time is probably the Walther TPH .22 and it is what I carry in the woods always.

My son just got a Mac with my encouragement; but it is of course software challenged. And there is a solution to the Harley ;) a Kawasaki twin! I sat with the Kow designer of the twin for a few hours one time and he described how they designed the Kow twin to go after the Harley market. They just made it bigger and when it was all done they welded an UNballancer on the crankshaft so that it would FEEL more like a Harley as that was the big reason the focus group liked the Harley more... they liked the rattle and shake... 'Course Harley owners also like the sweet smell and that special signature of a little oil puddle which is left where you park them. They mark territory like an male Airedale. ;) It's that manly territory marking that Harley's do that makes them so loveable I guess AND that vibration when you sit on them too I suppose... sort of an adult marital aid sort of feel to them... ;)
