MAK 90

Just saw a MAK 90 in a local gun shop. Price tag was $499, but it had quite a bit of rust on it. Are these good AKs and if so, should I trade my Yugo M70 uderfolder for it? The Yugo does not have a chrome lined barrel, but the MAK 90 does. The yugo receiver is more solid, built on an RPK receiver. What should I do?

Norinco or Poly Tech?

Stamped receiver?

How many mags?

What maker are they?

Is there any kind of muzzle device on the barrel?

I'd pass. There are just too many AKlones out there. I just couldn't pay real money for a rusty one. That's just poor retailing.

I realize the market is a bit flat in some areas, but I'd keep looking. There are many out there, something better is bound to show up.

Ok, it is a Norinco, I remember that.

It has a stamped receiver.

1 thirty round mag.

No bayonet lug or threaded muzzle.

Thumbhole stock.

there good guns but think you should probably pass on that one, and wait for one in better condition.
whats wrong with the yugo?

It is mostly sprinkled surface rust, but covers most of the rifle only on the outside as best as I can tell. The rust is on the barrel, receiver, dust cover, and front sight.

By the way nothing is wrong with the yugo other than not having a chrome lined barrel. I jus wished it had a chrome lined barrel. Also the Mak 90 is a lot lighter than the yugo.

I'd stick with the Yugo. Chroming in the barrel really only matters if you're going to shoot corrosive ammo, and it sounds like the MAK is already corroding anyway. In order to take the MAK out of sporter config you'll need to add US made parts anyway (stock, pistol grip, trigger group should cover you).

You won't gain anything. You'll potentially lose something given the condition. Don't make the trade.

Either or. Surface rust wouldn't bother me normally. Hoppe's #9 and ultra fine steel wool makes short work of that. However, $500 is a bit much for it seeing how there's nothing wrong with what you have.

The other thing that bothers me about the Yugo is shooting steel case ammo in it. Will it wear out the chamber because it is not chrome lined?

To be quite honest, I'm not sure it matters. Some say yes, others, no. My Saiga isn't chrome lined and I shoot steel cased. My Stag AR isn't chrome lined and I shoot steel cased as well. I personally wouldn't hesitate to shoot it in a Yugo. Just my 2 cents.

Nope.

The thing was made to run steel case ammo. There's no shortage of combloc rifles with unchromed bores that have run steel case without a single issue.

Chrome lining in one of these things is only worthwhile if you're shooting corrosive ammo. Stick to noncorrosive or just clean it right after shooting and there's no problems.

I think I'll keep the Yugo and buy a CZ 82 pistol I saw at another local gunshop for about $150.00 instead. Also how hard is it to replace a shot out Yugo barrel once its useful life is over?

AK barrels aren't all that easy to replace. They're usually pressed into the front trunnion.

But then, I don't think I've ever heard of somebody needing to rebarrel an AK.
