Does anyone have any info on Magnum Research's BFR 45-70 revolver? I recently purchased one and am having problems with Winchester 300 grain HPFN sticking while loading the rounds. I can get 3 rounds into the cylinder and it begins sticking and the cylinder is very difficult to turn. HELP!

New gun, under warranty, can't load factory ammo? Call the maker, and send it back. They should pay for shipping, both ways.

DON'T Tinker with the gun, send it back. Also tell them the ammo brand, and lot#.

bfr 45-70

Hi there. I've got a couple of them. I have had that same problem with cirtain factory ammunition. I couple of low pressure commercial cartridges I've used in mine tend too leave more than dirty carbon soot. They leave unburned, or partially unburned kernels of powder around the mouth of the case. When I extract the case, it tends to drag some of these back into the cylinder on the case's way out, as we know, b.f.rs are proud of tight tolerance, and the 45-70 is not a fully straight-walled cartridge, its slightly conical in design, unlike a .45 colt or similar true straight-walled case. The kernels are bulky enough to prevent the newly loaded cartridge from moving fully forward. The resistance in cycling is the rear of the case hitting areas of the recoil shield and loading gate. This is especially a p.i.a. If debris of this sort fills the small case rim rebate area at the heel of the cartridge. My solution was to move exclusively to "class II" or class III cartridges on either my handling, or factory ammunition to ensure higher case pressure, and a hot, and efficient powder burn. Its unfortunate, but the 45-70's case size doesn't lend itself well to downloading. And the b.f.r. Does not lend itself well to firing "dirty" ammo....or powder leftovers.

If by "well" you mean you need to do more than simply reduce the powder charge to download the round, then yes. Other than that the .45-70 runs extremely well on downloaded ammo.

And my advice about sending the gun back is only for actual mechanical issues. Crud, dirt, unburned powder, that is your concern, not the maker's.

Good Luck!

Still Searching

Thanks for all the interest and info. I have as yet to fire this handgun. It is brand new. I have called the manufacturer and they gave me a return authorization which I did. They returned the pistol back to me and it is still the same as when I sent it out. I am wondering if the problem might be the ammunition? Hornady rounds fit and allow the cylinder to move all the way around. I am really excited about firing this weapon but I don't want to give any other possibilities of failure contributed to me and my use.
