Has anyone ever fired one of these? I got a pamphlet at the local gun shop and noticed that they offer a 45/70 in a REVOLVER (7.5 or 10" barrel)

What possible *practical* use would one of these have? What kind of recoil must this have?

Looked at one chambered for 45/70 at a gunshop a few weeks back. Don't remember the barrel length, but the gun looked impressive.

When the shopowner showed me a round of 45/70 my eyes bugged out. Did not really have a desire to shoot that through a handgun.

He had the gun priced at a bit over $800.00, pretty reasonable.

Ive shot Maxine (BFR's pet name for the 45-70) on two occasions.
Ill admit, it was the first time I have been that nervous (read, scared to death  ) shooting a gun in years.
The first time I watched my, 6'2" & 220lb, dad get rocked back on is heels with 425gr reloads. Im thinking "self, You weigh about 2/3rds as much as he does...I wonder if Ill leave an outline of myself thru the wall behind me, like Bugs Bunny does"? You think Im kidding? :D
But the moment of truth arrives and I hold my breath...VERY NICE TRIGGER..."BOOOOOOM" I stopped and had to think if it was really that bad. Id actually compare it to the original Casull s/a cowboy gun with EVIL  reloads. The second time was with factory 45-70 ammo and was not quite as intense. All in all, ID LIKE ONE! The first session I was splitting playing cards at 15yds with it....very accurate gun. It was the 10" model...
Shoot well

Remember that the "huge" 45-70 shell was originally made to hold black powder, which was only 1/6th (approx.) as potent as modern smokeless powder.

Hell, that cartridge is so old, it was used at the Little Bighorn by both Custer's men and Sitting Bull's. Literally.

Hey, I think I want one of those 45/70 revolvers even more than a .454 Casull. The first time I seen one of those 45/70's was on Gunbroker.

45-70 Gvt as loaded for the trapdoor Springfields sent a 405gr bullet out at about 1125fps from a 20"bbl....or 1285fps from a 30"bbl.
Modern smokeless loads for modern rifles pack FAR more punch. Well over 3,000 ft lbs energy. Putting it in the 458 Winchester lower range.

Some of the warmer 45-70 loads operate close to 40,000 pressure.

Be carefull what you feed a handgun. Removal of front sight from skull could be painfull.

These revolvers weigh 4.6 lbs. empty. The grips make riding recoil very easy. Reload them to your comfort level. 405 gr. will do anything that needs to be done anywhere out of a handgun. I've had mine going on two years and it is still a hoot to shoot. Capable of just as much accuracy as the person holding it.

Jim , I agree the "caliber" is very very old. But with todays tech., its a wild round from a pistol. We chrono "EVILReloads" from Casulls at well over 2200 FPE....with less bullet weight than the Maxine. We havent chrono'd the Maxine but its my guess the 425gr reloads of my dad's buddy...were in the ball park.
Id be very interested to chrono the gun...regardless its just plainly and simply a very nice gun and an ETICKET ride to shoot.
Shoot well
