magnum problems, Model 19

Hey all:

Maybe you can help me. I have a retired police Model 19, made probably late '70s. When I shoot full power .357s the double action locks up. I can fire the first round double action but the second time I pull in double action the hammer won't come back.

I can fire single action no problem.

This does not occur with .38s.

Any idea what the problem is?

Appreciate any comments.

Could be any number of problems, from a broken spring to a really dirty action. Hard to say with certainty without looking at it.

I would have suspected case set-back locking up the cylinder, but if that were the case it would seem that single-action shooting would be a problem as well. Perhaps something in the trigger mechanism is failing to reset. I'd try making sure that both the chambers and the cartridges themselves are bone dry prior to shooting, and if that doesn't do the trick, take the gun to a competent smith.

Sounds like lube in the chambers. Are you swabbing them with lube after cleaning??????

Are you cleaning with a lube like Breakfree.

Clean out the cylinders with Bore Cleaner only. Then make sure your hands are not full of lube when you handle the magnums, if it persists let a Smith and Wesson Certifed Pistolsmith not your local Gunsmith check it out.

There are many Certified Pistolsmiths in the Guild. I like Clark in Louisiana.

My best guesses are that you have a weak spring somewhere in the gun. It could be the bolt or hand springs that aren't resetting. Or it could be a too-light or worn rebound slide spring (let a gunsmith do this one).

If your gunsmith suggests a new set of springs, do yourself a favor and have all of them replaced. If your police gun was used enough to wear out one or more springs then it'll be worth the modest cost to replace 'em all for reliability reasons.
