Magazines for the Kimber - A few questions and request for input!

I am a relatively new member, and a lot (practically all) of my recent handgun decisions were as a result of the sage (well not all of it - but some of it was d@#n funny) advice of the members of this forum. I am recently in the process of purchasing a Kimber Pro Eclipse II, and saw that it comes with only one magazine (another issue for another thread)!!!

What then, are your recommendations for a good (read:100% reliable) magazine for this weapon?

Question #2 - Should I buy the "Kimber" brand magazine?

#3 - Will a McCormick 10 rnd extend 2 rounds + the base pad below the mag well? (The Pro Eclipse is 8+1) Or will only a bit of the magazine plus the pad extendfrom the bottom?

Mike11b:

For 100% reliability, I use Wilson mags. The opinions on magazines are as vast as the number of makers. There are many fine magazines to be had.
I don't have any experience w/ Kimber mags so, can't help you there but when buying mags, I always get a good aftermarket mag such as the Wilson.

Yes, the 10rd will extend slightly a bit from the magwell. It will be noticeable but will function just fine.

FWIW, I've never had a problem with the Kimber magazine. From what I've read, most people have found the Kimber mag to be OK and have purchased Wilsons for CCW.

I picked up a couple of cheap (< 8 bucks apiece) mags and had failures to feed on the last round. Wolf ammo only. But the Kimber factory mag feeds great, even with the cheap practice ammo.

Kimber factory mags are made by MecGar. At least that's what came with my Kimbers. I have dozens of MecGar mags for various handguns, and have never had a single problem with any of them.

there is no such thing as a 100% reliable magazine. any magazine, no matter how well it's made, has the possibility of causing a jam and any gun, now matter how reliable you think it is, can too jam or malfunction. that being said i use Wilson 47D 8rd. mags in my Kimber and they have been working out fairly well for me. don't buy any more Kimber brand magazines, i've had a few jams with the one that came with my Kimber and i'm by far not the only person who's ever had problems with them. Wilson or McCormick Power Mags are both much better mags IMO. the 10rd mags will extend about the length or 2 addition round below the base of the grip or a little more.

Re: Kimber magazines

I prefer the Wilson magazines but carry the McCormick (SP?) Shooting Stars as well. No problem with either.

I have never had a problem with Kimber, Colt, Wilson, or McCormick mags.

In fact, thinking back on it, the only ones I have had problem with were some El Cheapo mags from Red China that I bought from a Skinhead at a gunshow in Birmingham Alabama.

Shootin buddy had three Mec-Gars (Sig 220). Two split veritcally on the back side just below the lips. He sent em to Mec-Gar, several months and no response to letter or email. Meanwhile, the third one split the same way.

We don't do Mec-Guar no mo.

I've got two Kimbers (Pro Carry, Custom Target) and have had problems with exactly 50 percent of my mags. The ones that work are great. I kept one of the bad mags just so I can practice malfunction drills! I'll be ordering Wilsons soon.

I love my Kimbers but it's ridiculous that that a $700+ gun doesn't come with better magazines. Never had a problem with factory mags from any other brand.

Kimber factory mags have been a pain in the ass for me. I like the Wilson 7rd. and Metalform 7rd. mags. If you pull apart a Wilson 8rd. and a 7rd., you'll notice that the 7rd. spring has a lot more coils on it, the spring is under a lot less stress so you can leave it fully loaded a lot longer than an 8rd, without it "getting weak". I'd rather "give up" a rd. for better reliability. The Wilson 7rd. follower is also beefier than the 8rd. 7 230grn. cartridges are "heavy", you want enough oomph to push them up when you need 'em! I would also go with round top followers only, (metal preferably, they won't wear where they contact the slide lock lever) they seem to feed the last round consistently better than split type, and will also never move forward after the last rd. is fired, so they'll always eject cleanly. Metalform makes a model w/ a stamped metal removable baseplate that makes cleaning a breeze. Good luck.

Kimber mags suck. My favorite story (happened to me) was I had a full mag in the kimber preparing to shoot when the welds holding the base plate in place gave way.

The spring blew the base plate down and dropped out 6 rounds of ammo at my feet.

Gun used to jamb more frequently than I wanted to see.

Bought Wilson 8 rounds for a Classic stainless. Has yet to jamb, works flawlessly.

Go with Wilson and find something else to worry about.

I use Wilson's in all of my 1911's.
It may sound a little far fetched but, they have cured
any feeding problems I have ever experienced with factory mags.
They really are that good. ;)

The "ONE" mag that came with my Gold Match wont even feed
hardball 100%. My Wilson's are yet to bobble anything in almost 1000 rounds.
