Magazine trouble with p226

I have a sig p-226 in 9mm, and I recently was given a new high cap magazine from my Grandfather. The magazine was Italian made and was new form a reputable gun dealer. While shooting my uncle and two of my friends reported that the slide catch did not engage when the final round was fired. I soon after took the pistol out and put close to fifty rounds through that specific magazine without a fault. I was wondering if anyone had heard of this before with pre-ban mags.

I have seen this before. If you disassemble the magazine and compare the follower to a SIG follower, most likely you will find that the follower from the Italian magazine doesn't have the front and rear skirts of the SIG follower. These skirts help prevent the cartridges from nosediving in the magazine. Without these skirts the follower can, and will, rock in the mag body. This can also cause the follower to fail to engage the slide lock lever after the last round has been fired. This can occasionally happen with factory mags as well.

Order a follower from SIG Arms and a new mag spring (make sure to specify its for a standard capacity magazine). This should solve your problem. Is it a MecGar mag?

So many pistols, so little money.

I agree that you would be best off in ordering SIG followers and springs. I bought some USA and factory mags, and in a side by side comparison of the followers I noticed that that the USA's follower contour'detail casting/molding (is that the right term?) was not as crisp as the SIG follower. that might possibly, with the slippery plastic used in the followers, may make the engagement of the follower with the slide stop more difficult. But it is only an untested idea.
