Magazine Suggestions & newbie questions

Hey everyone, first post and pretty new to the handgun world. I've shot multiple times with my dad (20 year military vet) but I don't really have any actual knowledge on handguns. I was recently given one that belonged to my uncle who passed away and I'd love any helpful tips and suggestions.

Armi Fratelli Tanfoglio SPA TZ 75 (9mm Parabellum)

It has the standard wood panels and no magazine or rounds. I picked up a set of Hogue rubber grips but that's literally all I've done with it. Any suggestions on what the best type of magazine would be and where to purchase? Any additional info would be really appreciated. Thanks guys!

Just about any CZ or Witness mag for the full-size gun should work in your TZ. You have an early copy of the CZ design, but not a true clone.

Tanfoglio also builds the Witness line sold by EAA, and supplied frames and other parts for a number of other guns over the years, including guns sold Magnum Research (such as the Baby Eagle), David, and a variety of guns made in Italy but completed elsewhere, or in the Czech Republic (and imported by TATCO), etc.

Magazines for CZs or Witnesses typically work fine, and springs (recoil and magazine) are available from Wolff Springs. (You may have to use Witness or CZ springs -- but they're the same for most of them. Exctractor springs and hammer springs may be different; for hammer springs, you'll probably find the CZ springs are best -- as Witness changed their design in recent years.)

If you need other parts, you can often get them from EAA, or go to Numrich.

I would avoid the PRO-MAGs shown in the link above; their full-size mags tend to be troublesome in CZ-pattern guns, but Pro-Mags for CZ compacts are quite good. Any Mec-Gar mag for the full-size CZ or Witness from various sources should be superior. Mec-Gar provides original equipment mags for many gun makers, including CZ. (Mec-Gar built a lot of the Tanfoglio mags over the years for Tanfoglio.) CDNN generally has good prices, and other sources on the net can sometimes offer better prices. The $20-$30 range is what you should expect, and shipping costs, if you're only getting a couple, is what to watch for.

Perfect, thanks so much for the info. I keep seeing Mec-Gar pop up as the best choice so that definitely seems like my best bet.

If I'm able to take it to a local shop that can fit it with a proper magazine, is it possible to have them actually shoot the gun (if they have a range or testing area) to make sure everything is working fine on it...or is that an odd request?

YOU should shoot it at their range!

If the mag locks in place, it's almost certain that the gun will not fail due to a magazine-related issue. If they have someone reasonably savvy about guns (maybe a gunsmith) they can check it out pretty easily.

If you're only trying to assure yourself that it's a functional weapon before you sell it, let them shoot it for you. Otherwise, you need to start getting familiar with it...

They're typically pretty nice guns.

That's perfectly reasonable if they have a place they can fire the pistol.
They may want you to buy the ammo
