Magazine problem or normal function?

I am a recent convert to the 1911 style pistol,I have a SA v-10 compact, and I recently purchased a 1991 Colt govt model. My question is when I try to put the magazine in the pistol, the only way it will go all the way in is if I depress the mag release button, then finish pushing it all the way in. Is this normal?,or is this a mag defect,I only have 1 mag so I have not tried another yet.My Springfield does not do this,I would think this is abnormal as it would really slow down the reloading process. I am geting ready to get some new mags anyway, could use some advice on some brands to get. The mag I have is a 7 round, can I get an 8 round for it? Thanks,PJ

This is "normal" for a 1991A1 Gov, but it is not right. I had the same problem with my 1991 Gov'nt and an Ed Brown mag catch fixed it up nicely.

I get that with my 1911A1s, but not my TRP...
But if I "slam" the mag in - it gets in with no problem... and it seems to be getting better... so next year I may not even have to slam it.
This a new gun?

The magazine catch might wear in and solve the problem. It needs the angle changed on the protusion that "catches" the magazine.

Better days to be,

Well, I think you'll find if you use a bit more "oomph" when you shove it in, it won't require a push of the mag release. After you use the gun awhile, it will also get "broken in" and be less obvious. :)
