Magazine Manufacturing - ATF approval?

Does the ATF require approval for designing and selling detachable box magazines? I have searched all most of thier docs and forms and can't seem to find anything. I guess that means no? I am drafting up a letter to write the ATF's legal department but I guess I thougt I would just chime in here to see if anyone knew the deal before waiting a year for thier response.

Watch out for state law, though. Some states ban possession (which would obviously include manufacture) of magazines over a certain number of rounds.

Making magazines may not be that easy, though. I was once told that the hardest part of making a submachinegun would be making the magazine; the gun would be simple.

Manufacture of any small arms repair or replacement parts puts you or your business under the thumb of ITAR. You are required to register with them for the low, low price of only $2,250 per year. You don't even get a nice certificate to hang on the wall. Failure to register will get you a $250,000 fine plus other penalties they may care to levy.

If you have the parts made in China and sell them here, no problemo.
