Most folks reading this are going to be at some kind of desk. Right now, sitting where you are, pick up everything within arms reach and see where it's made. In my case:
- Pair of 'It's Academic' scissors: Made in China
- Small surge protector: Made in China
- Buck knife: Made in USA
- Sony Handycam: Made in Japan
- Microsoft Optical Mouse: Made in Mexico
- Generic Keyboard: Made in China
- Coffee Mug: Made in Indonesia
- Corelle Plate: Made in USA
Obviously supporting my own national (US) economy makes sense, but what are the benefits of supporting the national economies of China, Japan, Indonesia or Mexico? I won't say it's zero, but there isn't a clear answer either.
The best estimates i was able to find (CIA, EIA) put Iraqi unemployment at anywhere from 25-40%. If idle hands are the devil's tools, i think it behooves anyone interested in a positive outcome in Iraq to support their workforce (e.g. non-oil exports). The opportunities may be few and far between, but every dollar you send to an Iraqi citizen that's trying to make an honest living is, in my opinion, one less hammer in the devil's toolbox.
