I remember seeing some articles about a Suburban conversion which featured a pop-up mount for a M134 Minigun. It appeared to be just the ticket for tailgaters. ;)

Awww....

I thought that this was a thread for the old Steve Jackson board games. Anyone else play "Car Wars" with dice and chips (before the computer age that is). Spent many geeky high school saturday nights playing it. Was he ever able to tell the SS to pound sand? Never heard the end of the story.

Ah well thanks for the short memory burst. :)

I have seen a fully bulletproof Suburban being shot at on the news(they didnt say anything bad about the idea either!). It was cool. They showed it being shot at with MP5's, M16's on full auto, other guys shooting at it with some hanguns, very cool, now if someone were to put the bulletproof kit on a Suburban along with the machine guns, than we would be in buisness.

No Daniel, I want to take the engine on the Tahoe/Suburban/whatever, and move it to the rear, over the rear axle, then mount the machine gun under the hood, with the turrets not extending being the grill guard, so it's a secret when not in use. Then put the firing control on the steering wheel where it belongs. THAT's what I'm talkin' bout. "Out of my way, slowpokes, or you'll be eating lead!"

Cool! I dare anyone to call their local VW dealer and ask if you can get the "submachine gun option" for the Passat! ;)

But you have to wonder; Why? What are they up to? Is this for real or a joke?

Daniel - The Suburban with the minigun really does exist. It's called the "Raptor". Armstech/Arcane Technologies, out of Pheonix, manufactures it as a VIP protection vehicle. The minigun is on a 360-degree ring mount with a hatch in the center so the operator can stick his head and shoulders out. The floor of the vehicle is all steel mesh so the empties can fall out. Really well put-together.

One thing, though. No armor. The theory behind the Raptor is that the bodyguards should be out killing the bad guys, not hiding in the limo. Besides, an RPG-7 will punch through any armor you care to slap on a car.

Don't forget the Viking APC, as described in Jane's...electrically raised turret replaces the back seat, fits the M2 family. Armored up to fend off 7.62, run flat tires, self-sealing gas tank, fun fun fun til Daddy takes the Viking away.

Can't remember what chassis it was built on, either a full sized Explorer or one of the smaller Suburbans...have to dig out my old reference materials...supposed to be a DOE toy, IIRC.

Thank you, I couldn't remember the name. I remember seeing it in Car & Driver, and I believe that Small Arms Review has covered it as well.

One of articles suggested that they had to make a choice between armor or ammo due to weight considerations. In addition, the original customer thought that it would be better to 'shoot and scoot' away from any ambush instead of sticking around to slug it out.

Christopher II and Daniel,
One of my students brought me that mag, the article was "Cars for the Working Rich" or something like that. Yeah, let's see the kid at the drive-thru get my order wrong NOW! Hahahahahahahahaha!
Whew, I'm okay now. :D

seronac, it's for real, but no one seems to know what it's there for.

I'll take a 50 caliber machine gun please.
Whoops, I meant to hit the windshield washer! SORRY!!

The Passat manual has a lot of poorly phrased things that didn't translate properly from German, but most of them are easy to work out. I can't figure out what this could be.

Looks like a European police option. Some European police carry submachine guns in their vechicles, just as American police carry shotguns.

I would suspect that this electrical hookup is for a electrically secured case for the SMG.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.
