TFL post on Carla Howell
Due to the above post, this Nevada boy contributed to Carla Howell's campaign and am now on her mailing list. Most of the time I don't bother with these "Gee, we're doing great" promos, but since Carla's the only one taking on Ted Kennedy, I thought I'd pass this on.
Typical "Bluddy peasant" attitude by Metro West and other interesting comments italicized and sometimes boldfaced.
The lady is pro RKBA all the way, so she merits support from all of us.
And, apparently us "keyboard warriors" do some good.
"+++ REACTION TO OUR OPEN LETTER TO TED KENNEDY +++
Your email activism produced terrific results to our Open Letter Challenging Ted Kennedy to Debate.
Our email campaign is having an effect! The media is paying attention. The Boston Globe. New England Cable News. The Jay
Severin Show. C-SPAN. MetroWest Daily News. The Brockton Enterprise. The Standard-Times. The Harvard Crimson.
We got both cheers & jeers from the media from our email campaign:
The Standard-Times reprinted Carla Howell's Open Letter Challenging Ted Kennedy to Debate.
Boston Herald Managing News Editor Andrew Gully said, "We're part of the media group that has arranged the U.S. Senate Debates in the past." "The Herald is all for Debates in this U.S. Senate race, with all three candidates: Senator Ted Kennedy, Jack Robinson and Carla Howell. The logistics are now being worked out."
Joe Sciacca, Political Editor for the Boston Herald agreed that Carla Howell should be included in the U.S. Senate Debates. "She's
run a strong campaign. Carla Howell has the viability to be included."
Democratic Representative Barney Frank agreed. After Debating his Congressional opponents on September 11th, Rep. Frank was asked whether Senator Kennedy should Debate Carla Howell, the Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate. Rep. Frank responded, "I debated my opponents. It's my civic duty as an office holder. I believe Senator Kennedy ought to face Carla Howell in debates. I encourage him to participate."
Tom Moroney, Political Editor for the MetroWest Daily News got cranky. He sent the same message to many volunteers, saying,
"Howell's new ads about cutting taxes until you won't even notice them bothers me to no end. They are annoying and cloying and nobody believes them. I'll consider your request only when she pulls those stupid ads. Thank you."
Our volunteer Chuck O. of North Andover responded: "Well I believe the ad. You may not support a view of government that limits its scope and permits its citizens maximum freedom, but I do. And Jefferson did ... along with Madison, Monroe, Washington ... and in more modern times, Reagan. It is a view that deserves to be heard. I ask again that you support a debate. If Carla Howell's position is as unreasonable as you believe it to be, the voters will reject it and they will become even stronger supporters of the nanny state. That's a risk we're willing to take. Are you?"
David Caruso, a reporter for the MetroWest Daily News delivered the coup de grace. He wrote an article on September 17th entitled: "Political Desk: Want a Revolution? Send email ... In Massachusetts, Libertarian candidate for US Senate Carla Howell has been using the net to bombard reporters and supporters alike with news of her campaign.
"Last week Howell volunteers sent out hundreds of emails to newspaper editors and television producers demanding that they
put pressure on her opponent, Sen. Edward Kennedy, to participate in a formal debate.
"Five years ago such a letter-writing campaign would have taken days. This time it took hours. The call for the letter writing campaign went out with a biweekly Internet newsletter at 3:30 a.m. on a Wednesday. By mid afternoon the emails were flooding cyberspace. Aside from clogging up Internet mailboxes in newsroom around the state, the electronic letters made a point: You can't ignore us anymore. (dawn is starting to break - Oatka)
"That is what we are hoping," said Libertarian Party spokeswoman Elaine Berchin. "The Internet is an incredible help for us, especially for the nature of what we do. We are fairly dispersed. We are financially challenged. The Internet is basically the leveler here. It reduces everyone to the same place."
"A place, she said, where you don't need that much money to get your message out."
On 9/16/00 the same paper wrote: "Time for Kennedy to join debates. Robinson and Howell ... deserve the opportunity to present themselves to voters on the same stage as the man they hope to replace. Kennedy is one of the giants of the Senate. After 38 years of service, his power and reputation are as strong as ever. In campaigns since his first race in 1962, he has proved himself a capable debater. He has nothing to fear. Kennedy's is not a lifetime appointment. He must face the voters every six years, and that means he must defend his record against legitimate challengers. For Kennedy, who is so far ahead in the polls and has so many advantages over his opponents, to play petty games over debates to give himself an even greater advantage, ill suits a man of his stature."

She didn't ask for it, but IMHO it would be prudent to keep the heat on - cheers to some, jeers to others.

Barney Frank (yeah, I know, buy he deserves a nod on his statement.) His site says, "To WWW Surfers: I do not maintain an E-mail address. The significant increase in mail volume that would result would place too great a strain on my resources and my staff's ability to keep up with their already heavy work load."

As for Robinson:
Election2000
"AS QUICK AS YOU CAN SAY JACK ROBINSON
Massachusetts' highest court ruled today that Republican Jack E. Robinson gathered enough valid voter signatures and should be allowed to make his long shot challenge of Sen. Edward Kennedy. ''We won,'' said Robinson, who was disavowed by his own party after embarrasing details about his past were revealed. The State Ballot Law Commission had ruled in favor of challenges to 129 signatures by the secretary of state's office and the state Democratic Party, making him 14 signatures shy of the 10,000 needed. Today's court decision overturned that ruling."
Let's try to get that bozo to back out - it probably won't work, but a little more heat never hurt. He doesn't even have a website or any other contact, so drop a line to the RNC at: Phone: 202.863.8500 | Fax: 202.863.8820 | E-mail: info@rnc.org
Yeah again, this is all an uphill fight, but if Jesse Ventura can get in, anything is possible. Worse case, you spent a few minutes of your time tilting windmills.
