M96 Swede Scout Rifle?

Brownells offers a sight mount (B Square Mauser Classic Military Mount, stock number 122-185-590) that clamps onto the rear sight ramp of the M96 Swede for use with a Scout scope with long eye relief. Has anyone tried this before? The mount costs about $70. My local gun shop has an M96 Swede going for $130. I have the carbine M38 Swede and haven't been able to devise a similar set-up. What do you guys think?

Just so happen to be building a semi-Scout on a Swede carbine. Tried one of those B-Square replace-the-rear-sight scope mounts on a Navy Arms Lee Enfield Jungle Carbine clone in .308 and it was just awful. Even with a raised comb synthetic stock, only my chin touched the stock when looking through the scope. Ack!

Luckily, those flat-stepped Mauser barrels lend themselves easily to making your own mount. I used a piece of 1-inch conduit with the Weaver rail off a 10/22 mounted atop it slid over entire barrel. Rear of pipe was attached with JB Weld; front has 3 small set screws in Y-shaped pattern so you can properly center on barrel. Hardest part is removing the old sight. It's soldered on; you need to get some Brownell's Heat-Stop paste to keep the heat from creeping down the barrel to the receiver when melting the old solder before removal of sight.

As soon as my synthetic stock comes in, me and the Swede Scout will be chasing some antelope.

I read somewhere, the step barrel is perfect for the Thompson Center Contender mount. You'd have to drill and tap 4 holes and the installation would be semi-permenant but it is strong, low and looks good... IF you can get the rear sight off...

Let us know how the project progresses... Pictures?

I purchased the B-square mount from Graf and Sons awhile back and mounted it along with a Springfield Armory 2X Scout scope. The setup worked pretty well, but as Boogerbawb so eloquently described, the scope sits up far too high for my liking. So I removed it and will try something else. In the meantime I am installing a higher front sight post to bring point of impact in line with the iron sights. Does anyone know of a rear aperture sight that could be installed with minimum gunsmithing? These Swedes are fun. :)

My gunsmith had a piece of....

brass .22 lr rail.

We soldered it on the rear flat of the barrel after heating and knocking the rear sight base off. Put a Simmons 2.5x LER scope on it.

It works well. It loads with stripper clips and is startlingly accurate.
