M96: rifle or carbine?

I have my name "on the list" at the local shop for one of the next batch of M96's that come in. But the question remains: rifle or carbine?

Does anyone have experience with both of these, and opinions on which is better? My use would be target shooting (plates) out to 600 yards, and the odd IDPA rifle side-match.

It is my guess that the carbine is about 2" longer than a 16" AR-15. Is that about right? I think the rifle is about 1" longer than my 18" FAL.

How much does a carbine kit cost, if I want both barrel lengths? How much does the zero change when you change barrels (ignoring velocity difference)?

Yet another question, are there any scope mounts besides the long one from Robinson? Ideally, I would like one set up in the forward position, for a red-dot, so I could keep the stock rear sight.

thanks

I have used both barrels with my M96. The carbine barrel makes the M96 just under 37" in overall length. I shoot the carbine barrel as accurately as the 20" barrel. I don't have exact measurements, however either barrel has produced better groups for me at 100 yards than any of my AR15s except for the 6724 target version. Some additional benifits of the carbine barrel are: better balance and in my case, the front sight is centered on the gas block instead of being far to the right like on my 20" barrel. The Robinson mount is rock solid for my red dot and it comes with a built-in flip up sight so that you can use "iron sights". I ran a 100 round Beta mag thru the M96 and it worked flawless. When I took apart the M96 for cleaning, the insides were much cleaner than I am use to seeing in an AR. I hope that this info is useful to you. I am sure that you will love the M96.

Do you know if it is possible to buy just an M96 carbine (w/o 20" barrel)? I am currently debating between purchasing this or paying a heck of a lot more for a pre-ban AR-15
