There is an article on the internet today regarding a redesign of the AK by Kalashnikov. The photo wasn't particularly good but it appears as though an extended mag well has been added. I had a Hungarian SA 85 M and really liked it except for the inserting and locking of the mag, much like the M1A (which I absolutely love) the mag had to be inserted very deliberately and 'pivoted' into place. That is not what one wants in a combat situation which is what the Kalashnikov was designed for. That is one of the advantages of the AR, the mag inserts into the well and is guided into place. I find it sort of funny, when I was in the Marine Corps I didn't particularly like the M16 but have since grown to really like it, kind of like when I was younger, I didn't like beer. Apparently things change over time.
